How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro (Fix EVAP Leak & Check Engine Light)
Step-by-step instructions, required parts/tools, safety tips, and what to do if the CEL stays on

🔧 Camaro - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Camaro is a quick job that helps prevent fuel vapor leaks and can stop an EVAP-related check engine light if the old cap is cracked or won’t click tight.
You’ll remove the old cap from the filler neck and install a new one until it “clicks” to seal correctly.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work outside or in a well-ventilated area—fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ Shut the engine off and keep sparks/flames away from the fuel door area.
- ⚠️ If you just drove, wait a few minutes—fuel vapors can be stronger when hot.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Flashlight
- Clean shop towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap (capless-compatible if equipped) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
- Make sure the fuel door area is clean so dirt doesn’t fall into the filler neck.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Use your hand to open the fuel door on the rear quarter panel.
- Use a flashlight to check the area for dirt or damage.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Put on nitrile gloves.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
- If your cap is on a tether, let it hang without twisting the tether.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface.
- Check the old cap’s seal (the rubber ring). If it’s cracked, flattened, or missing, it can leak vapors.
- Tip: Don’t push dirt into the filler neck.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
- Keep turning until you hear/feel at least one click (some caps click multiple times). This “click” means it’s tight enough to seal.
- If it doesn’t click or feels rough going on, remove it and start again to avoid cross-threading.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door firmly by hand.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Camaro and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If your check engine light was on due to a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- If the light stays on, an EVAP leak code may need diagnosis (cap, seal, purge valve, vent valve, or lines).
