š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and shift to Park.
- Turn the engine off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
- Open the fuel door and use a clean microfiber towel to wipe dust from around the filler opening.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Press the fuel door release (driver area) and open the fuel door by hand.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes free.
- If your cap has a tether (a small strap), let it hangādonāt twist the tether.
- If itās stuck, press inward then twist.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area
- Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (the flat/rounded area where the capās rubber gasket seals).
- Check the filler neck for nicks, cracks, or heavy rust. If you see damage, the cap may not seal well.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise until it seats.
- Continue turning until you hear/feel it click at least once (tightening limiter).
- Do not use tools to tighten the cap.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door until it latches securely.
- Wipe any spilled fuel immediately using the clean microfiber towel.

- Start the engine and confirm thereās no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If you had a check engine light from a loose cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off on its own.
