šŸ”§ MDX - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your MDX is quick and helps prevent fuel vapor leaks that can trigger a check engine light. The main goal is to install the correct cap and tighten it until it clicks so the EVAP system can seal properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • āš ļø No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
  • āš ļø Turn the engine OFF before opening the fuel door.
  • āš ļø Wipe dirt away from the filler neck so it doesn’t fall into the tank.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean microfiber towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle area.
  • Open the fuel door and use a clean microfiber towel to wipe dust from around the filler opening.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Press the fuel door release (driver area) and open the fuel door by hand.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes free.
  • If your cap has a tether (a small strap), let it hang—don’t twist the tether.
  • If it’s stuck, press inward then twist.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (the flat/rounded area where the cap’s rubber gasket seals).
  • Check the filler neck for nicks, cracks, or heavy rust. If you see damage, the cap may not seal well.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise until it seats.
  • Continue turning until you hear/feel it click at least once (tightening limiter).
  • Do not use tools to tighten the cap.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door until it latches securely.
  • Wipe any spilled fuel immediately using the clean microfiber towel.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If you had a check engine light from a loose cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after several trips, scan for codes—there may be another EVAP leak besides the cap.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.2 hours.
