🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

The fuel cap on your Sierra seals the fuel tank and helps keep the evaporative emissions system working correctly. If it is cracked, loose, or the seal is worn, replacing it is a quick fix that can prevent a check engine light and fuel vapor leaks.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the engine off and do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel door.
  • Work with the vehicle parked on level ground.
  • Let the fuel system sit for a few minutes after refueling before removing the cap.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the ignition is off.
  • Open the fuel door and inspect the current cap and seal area for dirt or damage.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • If the cap has a tether, let it hang free or unclip it if needed.
  • Do not force a stuck cap.

Step 2: Inspect the filler neck

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the fuel filler neck sealing surface.
  • Check for cracks, rust, or debris where the new cap seals.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap on the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Keep turning until it clicks or feels fully seated.
  • Hand-tight only.

Step 4: Verify the seal

  • Gently tug on the cap to confirm it is locked in place.
  • Close the fuel door.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and check the dash for any fuel cap or check engine warning light.
  • If a warning light was already on, it may take a few drive cycles to clear.
  • Make sure the cap clicks securely every time you refuel.
