🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

The fuel cap on your Passat is a simple part, but a worn seal can cause a fuel vapor leak and trigger the check engine light. Replacing it is quick and helps keep the fuel system sealed properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Do this with the engine off and the key away from the vehicle.
  • Do not smoke or work near open flames.
  • Make sure the fuel filler area is clean before removing the cap.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and switch the ignition off.
  • Open the fuel door.
  • Wipe dirt away from the filler neck before removing the old cap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old cap

  • Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes free.
  • Let the cap hang from the tether if equipped.
  • Inspect the old seal for cracks, flattening, or fuel odor.

Step 2: Install the new cap

  • Use your hand to thread the new fuel cap clockwise onto the filler neck.
  • Tighten it until it clicks firmly into place.
  • Do not use pliers or tools on the cap.
  • Hand-tight is the correct fit.

Step 3: Check the seal

  • Close the fuel door.
  • Make sure the cap is seated flush and not cross-threaded.
  • If the cap has a locking tab, confirm it locks properly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and check that no fuel cap warning message appears.
  • Drive normally for a few trips if the check engine light was on before.
  • If a fuel vapor code was present, it may clear on its own after several drive cycles.
