How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2016 Nissan TITAN XD (Fix EVAP Leak & Check Engine Light)
Step-by-step fuel cap replacement with required tools/parts, sealing tips, and post-repair EVAP check guidance
🔧 TITAN XD - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick job that helps keep fuel vapors sealed in the tank and prevents warning lights related to EVAP (fuel vapor) leaks.
If your cap is cracked, the seal is flattened, or it won’t click tight, replacement is the correct fix.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- â›˝ Work with the engine OFF and away from flames/sparks.
- 🧤 Don’t top off fuel; overfilling can damage the EVAP system.
- đź‘“ Avoid breathing fuel vapors; stand upwind if possible.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean shop rag
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap (EVAP-sealing, correct for your TITAN XD) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and shut the engine off.
- â›˝ If you just drove, wait a few minutes so vapors settle.
- 🧼 Wipe dirt off the fuel door area with a clean shop rag so debris doesn’t fall into the filler area.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Open the fuel door by hand.
- Use a flashlight to check the area for dirt or damage.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
- If your cap has a tether (the little strap that keeps it attached), gently unhook it by hand. Tether = strap that prevents loss.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces
- Use a flashlight to inspect the rubber seal on the old cap (cracks/flattening = bad).
- Use a clean shop rag to wipe the filler neck sealing lip (the smooth ring the cap seals against).
- Make sure there’s no sand/grit stuck on the sealing lip.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- If equipped, attach the tether to the new cap by hand (same location as the old one).
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise until it seats.
- Continue turning until you feel/hear it click (usually several clicks). Clicks mean it’s fully sealed.
Step 5: Close up
- Close the fuel door by hand.
- Use a clean shop rag to wipe any fuel residue, if present.
âś… After Repair
- 🚗 Start your A/C off and engine on; confirm there’s no strong fuel smell near the fuel door.
- đźź If you had a check engine light for an EVAP leak, it may take a few normal drive cycles to turn off after installing a good cap.
- 🔎 If the light stays on after several trips, the issue may be another EVAP leak (hose, purge valve, vent valve), not the cap.
