š§ X5 - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing your X5ās fuel cap is a quick job: you remove the old cap and install a new one that seals the fuel system properly. A bad cap can cause a fuel smell, a loose-cap warning, or an EVAP check-engine light due to vapor leaks.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, heaters, or smoking.
- ā ļø Turn the engine off and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle while working near fuel vapors.
- ā ļø Donāt top off the tank after the pump clicks off; it can trigger EVAP issues.
- ā ļø If you smell strong raw fuel after replacement, stop and re-check the seal.

- Go slowāplastic clips break easily.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- If equipped, clip the new tether into the same spot you removed the old one from (use your fingers; use the plastic trim removal tool only if needed).

- Keep turning until it clicks and feels fully seated (the cap should stop turning easily once itās tight).
Step 5: Close up and clean
- Close the fuel door.
- Use the clean shop towel to wipe any fingerprints or spilled fuel residue around the filler area.
ā After Repair
