🔧 NX - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your NX is a quick job that helps the EVAP system (the fuel vapor sealing system) keep fuel vapors contained. A worn or incorrect cap can cause a fuel smell and can even trigger a check-engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, cigarettes, or sparks.
  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and keep the key away from the vehicle while working at the fuel door.
  • ⚠️ If you hear heavy hissing when opening the cap, pause and let pressure release before fully removing it.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (EVAP-sealing type, correct for NX) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to P.
  • Turn the engine off and set the parking brake.
  • Have a clean shop towel ready to wipe the filler neck sealing surface.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the cap area if it’s dark.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • If it has a tether (the small retaining strap), let the cap hang without twisting the tether.
  • Slow down if you hear loud hissing.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surface

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the filler neck sealing lip (the smooth ring where the cap seals).
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe dirt or grit off the sealing surface.
  • Check the old cap seal (rubber ring) for cracks, flattening, or missing pieces.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Install the new cap onto the filler neck by hand.
  • Turn clockwise until you hear/feel it click several times (this is the cap’s built-in clutch telling you it’s tight enough).
  • Do not use tools to tighten the cap.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door firmly with your hand.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm the cap is fully seated if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your NX and verify there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If you had a check-engine light related to EVAP/fuel cap, it may take several normal drive cycles to turn off after the cap is correctly installed.
  • If the light returns, the issue may be a different EVAP leak (not the cap).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.3 hours.
