📋 Before You Begin

• Park the QX80 on level ground and shut the engine off.
• Make sure you’re away from open flames and anything that can spark.
• Wipe dirt around the fuel filler area using a clean shop towel so debris doesn’t fall in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

• Open the fuel door on the left rear side.
• Use a flashlight to look at the cap and the small tether (strap) that keeps it from falling.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

• Put on nitrile gloves.
• Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then pull it off.
• If you hear a soft “whoosh,” that’s normal pressure releasing.

Step 3: Remove the tether (if equipped)

• Look at how the tether attaches (usually a small clip on the fuel door or filler area).
• Use your fingers and a clean shop towel for grip to unclip it. Don’t yank—plastic clips can snap.
• Tip: Note the clip direction before pulling.

Step 4: Inspect and clean the sealing surface

• Use a flashlight to check the filler neck lip (the round sealing surface).
• Wipe the sealing surface with a clean shop towel.
• If the old cap’s rubber seal looks cracked or flattened, that’s a common reason for leaks and check engine lights.

Step 5: Install the new fuel cap

• Clip the tether onto the new cap (and back to its mounting point) the same way the old one was installed.
• Place the new cap onto the filler neck.
• Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks several times. This “click” is the cap’s built-in clutch that ensures it’s tight enough.

Step 6: Close up

• Close the fuel door firmly.
• Use the flashlight to confirm the tether isn’t pinched and the cap sits straight.

• Start the engine and check for any fuel smell around the fuel door area.
• If you had a check engine light from a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles (a few normal trips) to turn off on its own.
• If the light stays on, the vehicle may need the code cleared with a scan tool and/or further EVAP leak diagnosis.
