🔧 CX-5 - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your CX-5 is a quick job: you’ll remove the old cap from the filler neck and install a new, correct-fit cap. A worn or incorrect cap can cause fuel smells and may trigger an evaporative emissions leak warning.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work outside or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ Turn the engine OFF and keep cigarettes/sparks/flames away.
- ⚠️ Don’t top off fuel after the pump clicks; it can damage the EVAP system.
- Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel filler cap (OEM-style, tethered) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and shut the engine off.
- Use nitrile gloves to keep fuel residue off your skin.
- Have a clean shop towel ready to wipe the sealing surface.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Open the fuel door on the rear quarter panel.
- Use a flashlight if lighting is poor.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then pull it off.
- If your cap has a tether (a small strap that keeps it attached), let it hang without twisting it.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area
- Use a flashlight to inspect the filler neck lip (where the cap seals).
- Wipe the sealing surface with a clean shop towel.
- Tip: Dirt here can cause EVAP leak codes.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Align the new cap with the filler neck and turn it clockwise.
- Keep turning until you feel/hear it “click” and it stops tightening normally (do not force past that).
- If the cap is tethered, make sure the tether isn’t pinched or twisted.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door firmly until it latches.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the filler area.
- If you had a Check Engine Light related to a loose cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own after the cap is properly installed.
- If the light stays on, a scan for EVAP codes is the next step.
