🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

The fuel cap on your Sierra seals the tank and helps keep fuel vapors contained. If the cap is cracked, loose, or the seal is worn, replacing it is quick and can help prevent EVAP-related warning lights.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Do this with the engine off and the vehicle parked safely.
  • Keep fuel, sparks, and open flames away from the fuel filler area.
  • If the fuel door or cap area is hot, let it cool first.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and make sure no one is fueling the truck.
  • If the old cap has a tether, inspect it for damage before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
  • Let it hang on the tether if equipped, or remove it fully if the tether is damaged.
  • Check the seal for cracks.

Step 2: Inspect the filler neck

  • Look at the fuel filler neck and cap sealing surface for dirt, rust, or damage.
  • If needed, wipe the sealing area clean with a dry cloth.
  • Make sure the rubber seal area is clean and smooth.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Align the new cap with the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Tighten until you hear or feel several clicks.
  • Torque to hand-tight only — do not use tools.
  • Stop at the clicks, not beyond.

Step 4: Verify the cap is sealed

  • Try turning the cap gently to confirm it is locked in place.
  • Close the fuel door.
  • If the check engine light was on for the cap, it may take a few drive cycles to clear.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and confirm no fuel smell is present.
  • Drive normally for a few trips if you were chasing an EVAP-related warning light.
  • If the warning light stays on, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system.
