🔧 Altima - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Altima is a very easy repair. The fuel cap seals the fuel tank, helps prevent fuel vapor leaks, and can fix an evaporative emissions warning or a loose-cap message.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔥 Work away from open flames, cigarettes, heaters, or sparks because gasoline vapors can ignite.
  • 🧤 Wear nitrile gloves if your skin is sensitive to fuel residue.
  • ⛽ Do not top off the fuel tank during this repair.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Altima on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🔥 Turn the engine off and keep the key or push-button ignition fully off.
  • ⛽ Let the area around the fuel door air out for a few seconds before removing the cap.
  • 💡 If the check engine light is on because of the fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off after replacement.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear side of your Altima.
  • If the fuel door is stuck, press gently on the rear edge and release it. Do not pry it with a tool.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
  • Let any light pressure release slowly. A small hiss can be normal.
  • Turn slowly to avoid fuel vapor splash.

Step 3: Remove the Retaining Tether

  • The tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the fuel cap attached to the fuel door area.
  • Use your hand to slide or pop the tether end off its mounting point.
  • Do not force it. The tether clip is plastic and can break if twisted too hard.

Step 4: Inspect the Filler Neck

  • The filler neck is the metal opening where fuel goes into the tank.
  • Use your eyes to check the sealing surface for dirt, rust, or damage.
  • If dirty, wipe the area gently with a clean dry cloth. Do not push debris into the opening.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

  • Use your hand to attach the new fuel cap tether to the same mounting point.
  • Make sure the tether is not twisted and does not get pinched by the fuel door.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue turning until you hear several clicks. This means the cap is tight enough.
  • No torque spec is used for this cap because it has a built-in ratcheting click stop.
  • Clicks mean sealed, not over-tightened.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
  • Check that the tether is tucked inside and not trapped outside the door.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Altima and make sure there is no strong fuel smell near the fuel door.
  • 🚗 If a loose fuel cap message was present, it may clear after the cap is tightened and the vehicle is driven.
  • ⚠️ If the check engine light was on, it may take a few normal trips for the EVAP system self-test to pass and clear the light.
  • 🔍 If the check engine light stays on after several days of driving, the EVAP system may have another leak that needs diagnosis.
