🔧 Altima - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Altima is one of the easiest DIY repairs. A worn, loose, or damaged fuel cap can cause fuel vapor leaks and may trigger a check engine light for an EVAP system leak.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔥 Do this repair with the engine off and the key away from the ignition area.
- 🚭 Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel filler area.
- 🧤 Fuel vapors can irritate skin and lungs, so work in a well-ventilated area.
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for fuel cap replacement.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses

- Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Altima on level ground.
- Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
- Turn the engine off.
- Let the area around the fuel door dry if it is wet or dusty.
- EVAP means evaporative emissions system. It keeps gasoline vapors sealed inside the fuel system instead of venting into the air.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel filler door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
- No tool is needed for this step.
- Work slowly near painted surfaces.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it is free.
- If your cap has a retaining tether, gently slide or unclip the tether from the fuel door area by hand.
- Do not use pliers on the fuel cap. They can crack the plastic and damage the sealing surface.
Step 3: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck
- Use your eyes to check the metal filler neck opening where the cap seals.
- Look for dirt, rust flakes, cracks, or a damaged sealing lip.
- If light dust is present, wipe it carefully with a clean dry cloth by hand.
- Do not push debris into the filler neck.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap
- If the new fuel cap has a tether, attach the tether to the fuel door area by hand in the same position as the old one.
- Place the new fuel cap straight onto the filler neck.
- Use your hand to turn the cap clockwise.
- Keep turning until the cap clicks several times. The clicking sound means the cap is tight enough.
- No torque spec is used because this cap has a built-in ratcheting click mechanism.
- Stop after the clicks begin.
Step 5: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
- Make sure it sits flush with the body panel.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Altima and confirm there is no strong fuel smell near the fuel door.
- If the check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may take several normal drive cycles to turn off by itself.
- A drive cycle means starting the car, driving normally, and shutting it off after the engine reaches operating temperature.
- If you have a scan tool, you may clear the EVAP-related code after replacing the cap.
- If the check engine light returns, the EVAP leak may be from another part, such as a purge valve, vent valve, hose, or filler neck seal.
