🔧 Fuel Filler Cap - Replacement
Replacing the fuel filler cap on your Focus is a quick job that helps prevent fuel vapor leaks and keeps the check engine light off when the EVAP system can’t seal properly. You’ll remove the old cap (and tether, if equipped) and install the new cap until it clicks.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- đźš« No smoking or open flames near the fuel filler area.
- 🧯 Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing fuel vapors.
- ⛔ Don’t top off the tank after the pump clicks off (helps protect the EVAP system).
- 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Shop towel
- Flashlight

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shut the engine off, and remove the key.
- Wait a minute if you just drove so fumes can settle slightly.
- Wipe dust around the filler neck with a shop towel so dirt doesn’t fall in.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Open the fuel door on the rear quarter panel.
- Use a flashlight if lighting is poor.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Grip the cap and turn it counterclockwise (left) until it comes off.
- If it feels gritty, use a shop towel to wipe the cap and the area around the filler neck.
- Turn slowly to avoid splashing fumes.
Step 3: Transfer or check the tether (if equipped)
- Some caps have a tether (a small strap) that keeps the cap from getting lost.
- If your new cap doesn’t include a tether, move the tether over exactly as it was on the old cap.
- Use nitrile gloves to keep fuel smell off your hands.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Place the new cap on the filler neck and turn it clockwise (right).
- Tighten until you hear/feel it click several times (this means it’s sealed properly).
- There are no torque specs for this—click-tight is correct.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door fully.
- Use a shop towel to wipe away any fuel residue if present.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the filler area.
- If you had a check engine light related to the fuel cap/EVAP, it may take a few normal drive cycles to clear on its own after the seal is restored.
- If the light stays on, the issue may be another EVAP leak (not the cap).
