How to Replace the Fuel Cap on a 2012-2018 Ford Focus (Capless EasyFuel vs Screw-On) (Engine: Inline 4 2.0L)
Step-by-step instructions, required tools/parts, safety tips, and what to do if your Focus has EasyFuel for 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018
🔧 Focus - Fuel Cap Replacement
Your Focus may have either a traditional screw-on fuel cap or Ford’s capless “EasyFuel” filler system (no gas cap). The replacement process is different, so I’ll cover both paths below so you can match what you see at the fuel door.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
- ⚠️ If you spilled fuel, wipe it up before driving.
- Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Shop towel
- Small flathead screwdriver
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
- Fuel filler capless system funnel - Qty: 1
- Fuel door tether/retainer clip - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and switch the ignition off.
- Press the fuel door release (if equipped) or push the fuel door in to open it (depending on how your Focus is set up).
- Use a shop towel to wipe dirt from the filler area so it doesn’t fall into the filler neck.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Identify which fuel fill system you have
- Open the fuel door and look at the filler opening.
- If you see a screw-on cap with a tether (strap), follow Steps 2A–4A.
- If you see a spring-loaded flap and no cap, you have capless EasyFuel—follow Steps 2B–4B.
Step 2A: Remove the screw-on fuel cap (traditional cap style)
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
- Wipe the sealing surface with a shop towel.
Step 3A: Transfer or replace the tether (strap), if needed
- If the tether is separate from the cap, gently pry the tether’s retaining tab using a small flathead screwdriver.
- Move the tether to the new cap (or install a new tether if your replacement includes one).
- Don’t yank—plastic tabs snap easily.
Step 4A: Install the new screw-on fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
- Keep turning until it is fully seated; if your cap “clicks,” tighten until it clicks and stops.
- Close the fuel door.
Step 2B: If your Focus is capless (EasyFuel), there is no fuel cap to replace
- Confirm you see a spring-loaded flap inside the filler neck and no removable cap.
- What you can replace instead is the capless system funnel (used with a gas can) or service the filler neck if it’s sticking.
Step 3B: Replace the capless funnel (if missing or damaged)
- Locate the funnel storage (often with the spare tire/jack area in the trunk).
- Install the replacement funnel into the storage holder by hand.
- Wipe it with a shop towel before storing so it doesn’t smell.
Step 4B: Check the capless filler flap operation
- With the ignition off, gently press the flap with the tip of the funnel to verify it opens and springs back closed.
- If it sticks, do not force it—tell me and I’ll walk you through the correct fix.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Focus and check the dash for a “Check Fuel Fill Inlet” or “Check Fuel Cap” message.
- If you had a screw-on cap: drive normally and recheck after a few key cycles. A loose cap can trigger an EVAP leak fault.
- If you smell fuel after the repair, stop and recheck that the cap is fully seated or the capless flap is closing.
