🔧 Soul - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing your fuel cap on your Soul is usually a quick job: remove the old cap, install the new one, and make sure it seals correctly. A good seal helps prevent fuel vapors from escaping and can prevent an EVAP-related check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, cigarettes, or sparks.
  • ⚠️ Do not replace the cap right after driving if the area is hot; let it cool a few minutes.
  • ⚠️ If you smell strong fuel odor or see wet fuel around the filler neck, stop and inspect for leaks before driving.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Small flat trim tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (EVAP-sealing type) - Qty: 1
  • Fuel cap tether/retainer (if damaged) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Soul on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine off and remove the key (or keep the fob away from the vehicle).
  • Open the fuel door.
  • If the cap feels “stuck,” press inward slightly first, then twist.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Grip the cap and turn it counterclockwise until it releases.
  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe any dust from the cap area.

Step 2: Inspect the sealing surface

  • Use the clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck lip (the round surface the cap seals against).
  • Look for cracks, heavy rust, or nicks on the sealing surface.
  • Clean sealing surface prevents EVAP leaks.

Step 3: Transfer or verify the tether (strap)

  • If your cap has a tether, check that it’s not torn or missing.
  • If the tether needs to be moved, use a small flat trim tool to gently release the tether clip (a clip is a small plastic retainer that snaps in place).
  • Attach the tether to the new cap the same way it was on the old cap.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap onto the filler neck and turn it clockwise.
  • Continue turning until you feel/hear it “click” several times and it stops tightening.
  • Do not use tools to tighten it; hand-tight only.

Step 5: Close up

  • Close the fuel door securely.
  • Use the clean shop towel to wipe any fingerprints or dirt if needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Soul and verify there is no fuel smell near the fuel door.
  • If you had a check engine light from a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after a few days, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system (not just the cap).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
