🔧 SRX - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your SRX is a quick job that helps prevent fuel vapor leaks and keeps the check engine light from coming on due to an EVAP (evaporative emissions) leak.

You’ll remove the old cap, inspect the filler neck seal surface, and install a new cap until it clicks.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and keep away from sparks, cigarettes, or open flames.
  • ⚠️ Don’t overfill the tank; stop at the first pump click.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (OEM-style, tethered) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your SRX on level ground and switch the ignition OFF.
  • If you just drove, wait a few minutes so any fuel vapors can settle.
  • Open the fuel door on the left rear quarter panel.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • Let it hang by the tether (the small strap that keeps you from losing it).

Step 2: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces

  • Use a flashlight to look at the filler neck rim (where the cap seals).
  • Wipe the rim with a clean shop towel to remove dust or grit.
  • Grit here can cause EVAP leak codes.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap onto the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Tighten until you hear/feel at least 1–3 clicks (the clicks mean it’s sealed).
  • Do not use tools to tighten the cap.

Step 4: Close up

  • Make sure the cap is seated flat and the tether isn’t pinched.
  • Close the fuel door.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your SRX and verify there’s no “loose fuel cap” message (if equipped).
  • If you had a check engine light from a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after several trips, the issue may be another EVAP leak (not the cap).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.2 hours.
