🔧 F-150 - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap is usually a quick job: remove the old cap and install a new one that seals correctly. A good seal prevents fuel vapors from leaking and helps avoid a check-engine light caused by an EVAP leak.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔥 Do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • đźš No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves; gasoline can irritate skin.
  • â›˝ If you just drove, let the area cool down before working near the filler.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop rag
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your F-150 on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Open the fuel door and look at the filler neck:
  • âś… If you see a normal threaded neck where a cap screws on, follow the steps below.
  • ℹ️ If you see a spring-loaded flap with no threads (Ford “Easy Fuel” capless system), there is no fuel cap to replace—tell me if that’s what you have and what problem you’re trying to solve (check-engine light, broken flap, won’t take fuel), and I’ll give the correct fix.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Open the fuel door.
  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it comes off.
  • If the cap has a tether (a small retaining strap/cable), let it hang.

Step 2: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces

  • Use a flashlight to look at the filler neck sealing lip (the smooth ring the cap seals against).
  • Use a clean shop rag to wipe off dust or grit.
  • Check the old cap’s rubber seal (the rubber ring). If it’s cracked, hard, or missing, that can cause an EVAP leak.
  • Keep dirt out of the filler neck.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap onto the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Tighten until it clicks (usually 1–3 clicks). Do not use tools—hand tight only.
  • Close the fuel door.

Step 4: Clear/verify a previous warning (if applicable)

  • If you previously had a check-engine light from a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own after the seal is fixed.
  • If you have a scan tool, you can clear the code after installing the new cap.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm there’s no “Check Fuel Cap” message.
  • After your next fill-up, re-check that the cap is tight (clicked).
  • If the check-engine light returns, the issue may be elsewhere in the EVAP system (purge valve, vent valve, leak).

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $10-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $30-$80 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
