🔧 Optima - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is quick and helps seal the fuel tank so fuel vapors don’t escape. A loose, cracked, or wrong cap can trigger a check-engine light and cause a fuel smell.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔥 Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- đźš No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the filler area.
- 🧊 Let the car cool if it was just driven (hot parts + vapors are a bad mix).
- 🔌 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Nitrile gloves
- Clean shop rag
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap (OEM-style, sealed) - Qty: 1
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park your Optima on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- If you just fueled up or the car was running, wait 2–3 minutes before removing the cap.
- Wipe dirt away from the fuel filler area using a clean shop rag so debris doesn’t fall inside.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Press the fuel door (or use the release inside the car if yours has one).
- Use a flashlight to check the area for dirt or damage.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Turn the cap counterclockwise slowly by hand until it comes off.
- If you hear a light “hiss,” pause for a second, then continue. That’s tank pressure releasing.
- If your cap has a tether, keep it attached: the “tether” is the small strap that keeps the cap from getting lost.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surface
- Use a clean shop rag to wipe the rubber sealing surface around the filler neck.
- Check the old cap’s rubber seal for cracks, flattening, or missing pieces.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
- Keep turning until it clicks firmly (usually 3 clicks).
- Do not use tools to tighten it—hand-tight is correct once it clicks.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door and make sure it latches flush.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Optima and confirm there is no fuel smell around the rear quarter panel.
- If you had a check-engine light from a loose cap, it may take a few normal drive cycles to clear on its own.
- If the light stays on after a few days, scan for codes—there may be an EVAP leak elsewhere.
