๐ง Tucson - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Tucson is one of the easiest repairs you can do. A worn, cracked, loose, or missing fuel cap can trigger an evaporative emissions leak warning and may turn on the check engine light.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes
โ ๏ธ Safety & Precautions
- ๐ฅ Work in a well-ventilated area and keep flames, cigarettes, sparks, and hot tools away from the fuel filler area.
- ๐งค Avoid breathing fuel vapors directly when the fuel door is open.
- ๐ Park your Tucson on level ground and shut the engine off before starting.
- ๐ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
๐ง Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Clean shop towel

- Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1
๐ Before You Begin
- Park your Tucson on level ground with the engine turned off.
- Set the parking brake.
- Let the vehicle sit for a minute before opening the fuel door if you recently drove it.
- The fuel cap has a tether, which is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap attached to the fuel door area.
๐จ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to open the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
- Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe dust away from the area around the fuel cap.
- Keep dirt out of the filler neck.
Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap
- Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
- Let the cap hang by its tether if it is still attached.
- Look at the rubber sealing ring on the old cap. If it is cracked, flattened, missing, or hard, replacement is needed.
Step 3: Detach the Fuel Cap Tether
- Use your fingers to remove the tether from its mounting point near the fuel door opening.
- The tether usually pops off the small retaining post by pulling it straight away by hand.
- Do not pry hard against the painted fuel door area.
- Gentle pressure prevents broken plastic.
Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether
- Use your fingers to press the new fuel cap tether onto the retaining post.
- Make sure the tether is fully seated and does not fall off when lightly tugged.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap
- Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck by hand.
- Turn it clockwise until you hear or feel several clicks.
- No torque wrench is used for this cap; tighten it by hand until it clicks.
- Torque to hand-tight until clicking stops; do not overtighten.
Step 6: Close the Fuel Door
- Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe fingerprints or fuel residue from the paint.
โ After Repair
- Start your Tucson and check that the fuel door area is secure.
- If the check engine light was on because of a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- A drive cycle means the vehicle is driven, parked, cooled down, and driven again while the engine computer checks the fuel vapor system.
- If the check engine light stays on after several days of normal driving, have the codes scanned to confirm there is not another evaporative emissions leak.
