🔧 Elantra - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap is a quick job that helps keep the fuel system sealed. A bad or missing cap can trigger a check engine light (EVAP leak) and may cause fuel smells.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area and keep away from flames or sparks.
- ⚠️ Do not replace the cap while actively refueling or with fuel spilled around the filler neck.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Clean shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap - Qty: 1
- Silicone grease (fuel-safe, for gasket) - Qty: 1 (optional)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the engine off.
- Let any fuel vapors clear for a minute before opening the fuel door.
- Wipe dirt around the filler area using a clean shop towel so debris doesn’t fall in.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Press the fuel door (it’s the push-to-open style on your Elantra) to pop it open.
- Use a flashlight to check for dirt or damage around the filler neck.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
- If the cap is tethered (attached by a strap), let it hang without twisting the strap.
- Tip: If it’s stuck, turn slowly and steadily.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces
- Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (the smooth rim where the cap gasket seals).
- Check the old cap’s rubber gasket for cracks, flattening, or missing pieces.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Place the new cap onto the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
- Tighten until you feel/hear at least one click (that click means the cap is sealed correctly).
- If you have it, apply a very light film of silicone grease (fuel-safe, for gasket) to the cap gasket first. This helps prevent sticking. Use only a tiny amount.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door firmly until it latches.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell near the rear of the car.
- If you had a check engine light for an EVAP leak, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own after the cap is installed correctly.
- If the light stays on after several trips, the issue may be another EVAP leak (not the cap).
