🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

The fuel cap seals the fuel filler neck and helps maintain the evaporative emissions system. If the cap is cracked, the seal is damaged, or it no longer tightens properly, replace it to help prevent fuel vapors from escaping and to avoid a check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the vehicle parked on level ground and the hybrid system OFF.
  • Do not smoke or work near open flames while the fuel door is open.
  • Let the fuel area cool if the vehicle was recently driven.
  • No battery disconnect is required.
  • Be careful not to drop debris into the fuel filler neck.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • No tools required
  • Clean shop towel
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and switch the vehicle fully OFF.
  • Make sure the fuel door is unlocked and open.
  • Keep the old cap and new cap clean. Dirt on the seal can cause a leak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Press the fuel door to release it, then swing it open.
  • Let the fuel cap hang on its tether if it is attached that way.

Step 2: Remove the old cap

  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes free.
  • Inspect the rubber seal on the cap and the filler neck for cracks, dirt, or damage.
  • Wipe the sealing surface clean.

Step 3: Install the new cap

  • Align the new cap with the filler neck.
  • Turn it clockwise by hand until you hear or feel it click.
  • Make sure it is fully seated and locked.

Step 4: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door and make sure it latches flush with the body.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and check that the fuel door area is secure.
  • If the check engine light was on for an EVAP leak, it may take several drive cycles to clear.
  • Recheck the cap after your next fuel stop to make sure it is still tight.
