🔧 Forester - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Forester is quick and helps prevent fuel vapor leaks that can trigger a check engine light. The new cap must seal correctly, so the key is installing it cleanly and tightening it until it clicks.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area, away from flames or smoking.
  • ⚠️ Turn the engine off and remove the key before opening the fuel door.
  • ⚠️ Avoid getting dirt into the filler neck (the metal tube you fuel through).
  • Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the engine OFF and wait 1 minute to let vapors settle.
  • Have your clean shop towel ready to wipe the sealing area.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your flashlight to locate the fuel filler area if lighting is poor.
  • Open the fuel door and visually confirm you’re looking at the fuel cap (round cap on the filler neck).

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves to keep fuel smell off your hands.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases, then remove it.
  • If your cap has a tether (a small retaining strap), let it hang without twisting it.

Step 3: Clean and inspect the sealing area

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (where the cap’s rubber gasket seals).
  • Use your flashlight to check for cracks, heavy rust, or debris around the sealing surface.
  • Keep dirt out of the filler neck.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Install the new cap onto the filler neck by hand.
  • Turn clockwise until you hear/feel repeated clicks (this is the cap’s built-in limiter to prevent over-tightening).
  • Confirm the tether (if equipped) isn’t pinched and the cap sits flat.

Step 5: Close up

  • Close the fuel door firmly.
  • Use the clean shop towel to wipe any fuel residue from the area.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Forester and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • If you replaced the cap because of a check engine light, it may take a few drive cycles for the system to re-check the seal and the light to turn off.
  • If the light stays on, the issue may be a leak elsewhere in the EVAP system (the system that controls fuel vapors).

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)
