🔧 Forester - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap is quick and important because the cap seals the fuel system. A worn or incorrect cap can trigger a check engine light (EVAP leak) and cause fuel odors.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
  • ⚠️ Open the old cap slowly to release any pressure.
  • ⚠️ Engine off; let hot exhaust cool if you just drove.
  • Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (EVAP-sealing, correct fit for Forester) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Make sure you’re not at a gas pump actively fueling.
  • Have a shop towel ready to wipe the filler neck sealing surface.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the left rear quarter panel.
  • Use a flashlight if it’s dark to see the cap and tether clearly.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise slowly until it loosens, then remove it by hand.
  • Go slow—release pressure gently.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the rubber seal on the old cap for cracks or flattening.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (the smooth ring where the cap gasket touches).

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap into the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Keep turning until you feel/hear it click several times (typical is about 2–3 clicks).
  • Clicks mean it’s fully sealed.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door with your hand and make sure it latches flush.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
  • If you had a check engine light from a loose cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • If the light stays on after several days of normal driving, an EVAP code may need to be scanned to confirm it’s resolved.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
