🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

Your S60 uses a simple threaded fuel cap. If the seal is cracked, the cap no longer clicks tight, or the check-engine light is on for an EVAP leak, replacing the cap is the quickest fix. This is an easy repair that takes only a few minutes.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Do this with the engine off and away from open flames or sparks.
  • Do not smoke near the fuel filler area.
  • Make sure the fuel nozzle is fully out before removing or installing the cap.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shut the vehicle off.
  • Let the area around the fuel door cool if the car was just driven.
  • Wipe dirt away from the fuel filler neck before installing the new cap.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the rear quarter panel.
  • Check the area for dirt, dust, or fuel residue.
  • Keep grit out of the filler neck.

Step 2: Remove the old cap

  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
  • If the cap is tethered, let it hang from the retainer strap.
  • Inspect the rubber seal for cracks, flattening, or damage.

Step 3: Clean the filler neck

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe the cap seat and neck area.
  • Make sure no dirt is on the sealing surface.
  • A clean seal prevents vapor leaks.

Step 4: Install the new cap

  • Use your hand to thread the new fuel cap clockwise onto the filler neck.
  • Tighten until it clicks or seats firmly, depending on the cap design.
  • Do not over-tighten.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door by hand.
  • Confirm it sits flush and latches properly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the fuel cap warning is gone, if one was present.
  • If the check-engine light was on for an EVAP fault, it may take a few drive cycles to clear.
  • Check that the cap feels secure after your first fill-up.
