🔧 Grand Cherokee - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Grand Cherokee is one of the easiest DIY jobs. A worn, loose, or leaking fuel cap can trigger an EVAP leak code, a “gASCAP” message, or a check engine light because the fuel system cannot seal properly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🚭 Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel filler area.
  • 🧯 Work in a well-ventilated area because fuel vapors can be harmful and flammable.
  • 🧤 Avoid touching spilled fuel with bare hands.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift to Park.
  • 🔥 Turn the engine off and let the vehicle sit for a minute before opening the fuel door.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • ℹ️ The fuel cap seals the fuel tank vapor system. If it does not click tight, the vehicle may detect a leak.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to open the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
  • No tool is needed for this step.
  • Tip: Keep dirt away from the filler neck.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes loose.
  • If the cap has a tether strap, gently pull the tether end free from the fuel door or filler area by hand.
  • Do not use pliers or metal tools near the fuel filler opening.

Step 3: Inspect and Clean the Filler Neck

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to gently wipe the metal sealing surface where the cap gasket sits.
  • The gasket is the rubber sealing ring on the fuel cap.
  • Look for dirt, rust flakes, or damage around the filler neck opening.
  • If the metal sealing surface is badly bent, cracked, or heavily corroded, the new cap may not seal correctly.

Step 4: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • If the new cap has a tether, use your hand to attach the tether to the original fuel door or filler-area mounting point.
  • Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck by hand.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue turning until you hear at least 3 clicks.
  • No torque spec applies; the cap uses a built-in ratcheting click mechanism.

Step 5: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door fully.
  • Make sure it sits flush with the body panel.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Grand Cherokee and check that the fuel cap warning is no longer active.
  • 🚗 If a check engine light was caused by a loose or leaking fuel cap, it may take several drive cycles to clear on its own.
  • 🔍 A drive cycle means the vehicle is started, driven, warmed up, and shut off normally.
  • 🧰 If the check engine light stays on after a few days, scan for EVAP codes before replacing more parts.
  • ⛽ After your next refuel, tighten the cap until it clicks at least 3 times.
