🔧 Tacoma - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Tacoma is quick and helps prevent fuel vapor leaks that can trigger an EVAP check-engine light. A good cap also keeps dirt and moisture out of the fuel filler neck.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ No smoking, flames, or hot work near the fuel door.
  • ⚠️ Replace the cap with the engine OFF.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (threaded, OEM-equivalent) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • Open the fuel door and let any pressure equalize for a few seconds.
  • Wipe dirt around the filler neck using a shop towel so debris doesn’t fall in.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it comes off.
  • If the cap is tethered (attached by a small strap), let it hang or unhook it carefully by hand.

Step 2: Inspect the sealing surfaces

  • Use a flashlight to look at the rubber seal (O-ring) on the cap and the rim of the filler neck.
  • Wipe the filler neck sealing rim with a shop towel.
  • Tip: Cracked or flattened seal = EVAP leak.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Thread the new cap on by hand clockwise.
  • Tighten until you hear/feel it “click” (typically 1 click). Keep turning until it clicks and feels snug.
  • If there’s a tether, reattach it so the cap won’t be lost.

Step 4: Close the fuel door

  • Make sure the cap is fully seated, then close the fuel door securely.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Tacoma and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the filler area.
  • If you had a check-engine light for an EVAP leak, it may take a few normal drive cycles to clear on its own after replacing the cap.
  • If the light stays on, the issue may be another EVAP leak (hose, purge valve, vent valve), not just the cap.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.1-0.2 hours.
