🔧 RAV4 - Fuel Cap Replacement

The fuel cap is a simple service part that keeps fuel vapors sealed and the EVAP system happy. If the cap is cracked, the seal is damaged, or the tether is broken, replacing it can prevent a check engine light and fuel odor.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Fuel vapors can be harmful.
  • Do not smoke or work near sparks, heaters, or open flames.
  • Make sure the fuel nozzle is fully removed before touching the cap.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the engine off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the fuel door and inspect the old cap, seal, and tether before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases from the filler neck.
  • If the cap has a tether, let it hang from the fuel door area.
  • Turn slowly to avoid cross-threading.

Step 2: Inspect the filler neck

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface.
  • Check for dirt, damage, or fuel residue around the opening.
  • If the neck is damaged, the cap may not seal correctly.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Place the new cap on the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Keep turning until you hear or feel it click into place.
  • The cap should feel snug and fully seated.

Step 4: Verify the seal

  • Gently pull on the cap to confirm it is locked in place.
  • Close the fuel door.
  • Hand-tight is correct.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and make sure no check engine light is present.
  • If a fuel cap code was already set, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own.
  • Watch for fuel odor around the fuel door after your first drive.
