🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

The fuel cap on your Camry seals the fuel tank and helps the evaporative emissions system hold pressure correctly. If the seal is cracked, the cap is loose, or the warning light stays on, replacing the cap is a quick fix.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine OFF and the vehicle parked on level ground.
  • Do not smoke or work near open flame.
  • Keep the fuel door closed until you are ready to remove the old cap.
  • No battery disconnect is required.
  • Let the car sit a few minutes after refueling.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and shift to Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • If the fuel door is locked, unlock the vehicle first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Open the fuel door on the rear quarter panel.
  • Inspect the cap and tether before removal.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it releases.
  • Let the cap hang on the tether if equipped, or fully remove it if the tether is detached.
  • Check the rubber seal for cracks, flattening, or dirt.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Use your hand to place the new fuel cap on the filler neck.
  • Turn it clockwise until you hear or feel several clicks.
  • Tighten until it clicks firmly.

Step 4: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door fully.
  • Make sure it sits flush and opens normally.

Step 5: Confirm the repair

  • Start the vehicle and check the dash for any fuel cap warning.
  • If the check engine light was on, it may take a few drive cycles to clear.

✅ After Repair

  • Make sure the cap is snug after every refuel.
  • If the check engine light stays on after a few trips, the EVAP system may need diagnosis.
  • If the old cap was loose or damaged, keep the new one clean and dry.
