🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

The fuel cap on your Tacoma is a simple service part that seals the fuel tank and helps prevent EVAP leaks and check engine lights. If the seal is cracked, the cap won’t tighten properly, or the warning light is on, replacing it is the right fix.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine off and the truck parked on level ground.
  • Do not smoke or work near open flames.
  • Keep dirt out of the fuel filler neck while the cap is off.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • None
  • Clean shop towel
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the ignition is off.
  • Open the fuel door fully before starting.
  • Inspect the old cap seal and the filler neck for dirt or damage.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Use your hand to turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
  • If the cap has a tether, let it hang without twisting it.
  • Keep the seal area clean.

Step 2: Inspect the filler neck

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck opening.
  • Look for cracks, dirt, or damaged threads on the neck.
  • If the neck is damaged, a new cap may not fix the leak.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Align the cap with the filler neck and turn it clockwise by hand.
  • Continue turning until you hear several clicks.
  • The cap should feel snug and fully seated.

Step 4: Confirm proper installation

  • Try turning the cap lightly to make sure it is locked in place.
  • Close the fuel door.
  • Hand-tight only.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the truck and check the dash for a fuel cap or check engine warning.
  • If a check engine light was on for an EVAP leak, it may take several drive cycles to clear after the repair.
  • If the light stays on, the code may need to be cleared with a scan tool.
