🔧 Sienna - Fuel Cap Replacement

On your Sienna, the fuel cap seals the fuel system to keep fuel vapors in and helps the EVAP system run correctly. Replacing it is quick and prevents issues like a loose-cap warning or fuel smell.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.2 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area (fuel vapors).
  • ⚠️ No smoking, sparks, or open flames near the fuel door.
  • ⚠️ If the engine was just running, wait a few minutes before opening the cap.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (OEM-style, tethered) - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Sienna on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Make sure you’re away from anything that could ignite fuel vapors.
  • Wipe dirt from around the fuel door area with a clean shop towel so debris doesn’t fall into the filler neck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Open the fuel door on the driver-side rear quarter panel.
  • Use a flashlight to look for cracked plastic, missing tether, or dirt buildup.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases, then pull it straight off.
  • If your cap is tethered (a small strap), unclip the tether from the fuel door/cap bracket if needed.
  • Tip: If it resists, turn slowly—don’t force it.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck sealing surface (where the cap’s gasket seals).
  • Check that the old cap’s rubber gasket didn’t tear off and stick to the filler neck.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • If the new cap has a tether, clip it into the same spot as the original.
  • Place the cap on the filler neck and turn clockwise until you feel/hear it click.
  • Keep turning until it clicks at least once and feels snug. This ensures a proper seal for the EVAP system.

Step 5: Close the fuel door and verify fit

  • Close the fuel door and make sure it sits flush.
  • Use a flashlight for a quick final check that the cap sits squarely and the tether isn’t pinched.

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Sienna and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door area.
  • If you had a “Check Engine” light from a loose/failed cap, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own.
  • If the light doesn’t clear after a few days of normal driving, the EVAP system may have another leak that needs diagnosis.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
