🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Silverado is a quick fix if the old cap is cracked, won’t seal, or is causing an EVAP leak warning. A good seal helps the fuel system hold pressure and can prevent check engine lights related to evaporative emissions.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine off and the area well ventilated.
  • Do not smoke or create sparks near the fuel door.
  • Make sure the fuel filler neck is clean before installing the new cap.
  • No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine and exhaust cool if the truck was just driven.
  • Open the fuel door and inspect the filler neck for dirt or damage.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Open the fuel door and use your hand to turn the fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes off.
  • If the cap is stuck, wipe the area clean with a clean shop towel and try again.
  • Do not force it hard.

Step 2: Inspect the filler neck

  • Use a flashlight to look at the sealing surface and threads inside the fuel filler neck.
  • Wipe away dirt, rust flakes, or fuel residue with a clean shop towel.
  • Check for cracks or damage that could keep the new cap from sealing.

Step 3: Install the new fuel cap

  • Align the new cap with the threads and turn it clockwise by hand until it clicks or stops turning freely.
  • Keep turning until it is snug and fully seated.
  • Hand-tight only.

Step 4: Verify the seal

  • Close the fuel door and make sure the cap is seated flush.
  • Start the truck and confirm there are no fuel odor smells around the filler area.
  • If the check engine light was on for an EVAP leak, it may take a few drive cycles to clear after the repair.

✅ After Repair

  • Check that the cap is tight after your first drive.
  • Watch for any fuel smell or check engine light returning.
  • If the EVAP code remains, the vehicle may need a scan for stored codes and a leak diagnosis.
