🔧 Forester - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Forester is a quick job that helps prevent fuel vapor leaks and can stop an EVAP-related check engine light caused by a bad seal.

Most caps simply twist on/off, but you’ll want to confirm the seal seats correctly so the system can hold pressure.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
  • ⚠️ Engine OFF; no smoking, sparks, or open flames nearby.
  • ⚠️ If you just drove, wait a few minutes before opening the fuel door to reduce vapor pressure.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this on your Forester.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean shop towel
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap (OEM-style, tethered) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the engine is OFF and the key fob is away from the vehicle.
  • Wipe dirt from around the filler area using a clean shop towel so debris doesn’t fall into the filler neck.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use a flashlight to clearly see the cap and sealing surface.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Turn the cap counterclockwise by hand until it releases.
  • If it has a tether (the small strap that keeps the cap attached), let the cap hang without twisting the tether. Don’t yank the tether.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing surfaces

  • Use a clean shop towel to wipe the filler neck lip (the round surface the cap seal sits against).
  • Check the old cap’s rubber seal (gasket) for cracks, flattening, or missing pieces.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • Align the new cap and thread it on clockwise by hand.
  • Tighten until you feel/hear at least one “click” (this means the cap’s clutch is tight enough). Click = properly tightened.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Close the fuel door securely by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Forester and make sure there’s no fuel smell near the fuel door.
  • If you had a check engine light for an EVAP leak, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own.
  • If the light stays on after several normal trips, a scan tool may be needed to read the stored code and confirm the fix.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $40-$120 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $25-$75 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
