🔧 Forester - Fuel Cap Replacement
Replacing the fuel cap on your Forester is quick and helps prevent fuel vapor leaks that can trigger a check-engine light (often EVAP system codes). A good cap also keeps dirt and water out of the filler neck.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.1-0.3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work in a well-ventilated area; fuel vapors are flammable.
- ⚠️ Keep away from sparks, cigarettes, and open flames.
- ⚠️ Do not top off fuel; stop when the pump clicks off.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Shop towel
- Flashlight
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Fuel cap (OEM-style, tethered) - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and switch the engine off.
- Let the area around the fuel door cool down if you just drove. Fuel vapors increase when hot.
- Have a shop towel ready to wipe the filler neck sealing surface.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the fuel door
- Open the fuel door on the left rear quarter panel by hand.
- Use a flashlight if lighting is poor.
Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap
- Turn the cap counterclockwise until it releases.
- Set it aside while keeping the tether (the small strap that prevents losing the cap) from twisting.
- If it’s tight, turn slowly and steadily.
Step 3: Inspect and clean the sealing area
- Use a shop towel to wipe the filler-neck sealing surface (the smooth ring where the cap seals).
- Check the old cap’s rubber seal for cracks or flattening; that’s a common cause of EVAP leaks.
Step 4: Install the new fuel cap
- Align the new cap and turn it clockwise by hand until it’s snug.
- Continue turning until you feel/hear at least one “click” (that click means the cap is tight enough to seal).
- If your replacement cap includes a tether retainer, attach it the same way the original was attached.
Step 5: Close the fuel door
- Close the fuel door firmly by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm there’s no fuel smell around the fuel door.
- If your check-engine light was on due to a loose/bad cap, it may take a few drive cycles to turn off on its own.
- If the light stays on after a few days of normal driving, the issue may be another EVAP leak (hose, purge valve, vent valve).
