๐Ÿ”ง Grand Cherokee - Fuel Cap Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Grand Cherokee is one of the easiest DIY repairs. A loose, cracked, or failed cap can trigger an EVAP leak warning and may turn on the check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ Work in a well-ventilated area away from flames, sparks, cigarettes, or hot work lights.
  • โ›ฝ Do not replace the cap while refueling or while fuel vapors are strong around the filler neck.
  • ๐Ÿงค Wear gloves if the old cap or filler area is dirty or fuel-contaminated.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel cap - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Keep the ignition off during the repair.
  • โ›ฝ Make sure the fuel filler area is dry and not actively giving off strong fuel odor.
  • ๐Ÿงฝ A microfiber towel is a soft cloth that helps clean the filler area without scratching paint.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

  • Use your hand to press the rear edge of the fuel door inward, then release it so it pops open.
  • No tool is needed for this step.
  • Tip: Press gently, not hard.

Step 2: Remove the old fuel cap

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes free.
  • If the cap has a tether strap, carefully slide the tether loop off its retaining point by hand.
  • A tether is the small strap that keeps the fuel cap attached to the vehicle so it does not get lost.

Step 3: Inspect and clean the filler neck

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface around the fuel filler neck.
  • Check for dirt, cracks, rust, or debris where the fuel cap seal touches.
  • Do not push dirt into the filler neck.
  • Tip: Clean seal area = fewer EVAP leaks.

Step 4: Install the new fuel cap

  • If equipped with a tether, use your hand to attach the new cap tether to the same retaining point.
  • Place the new fuel cap onto the filler neck by hand.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue until you hear at least one firm click, which confirms the cap is seated.
  • No torque spec applies because the cap uses a built-in ratcheting click mechanism.

Step 5: Close the fuel door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
  • Make sure the cap tether is not pinched behind the fuel door.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿš— Start your Grand Cherokee and confirm there is no strong fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • ๐Ÿ” If the check engine light was on from a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off by itself.
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ A drive cycle means the vehicle is driven, parked, cooled down, and driven again while the computer runs self-checks.
  • ๐Ÿ“Ÿ If the light stays on after several days of normal driving, scan for diagnostic trouble codes before replacing more parts.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost
