🔧 Fuel Cap - Replacement

Replacing the fuel cap on your Altima is one of the easiest repairs you can do. A loose, cracked, or leaking fuel cap can trigger an evaporative emissions leak code and may turn on the check engine light.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🚭 Do not smoke or use open flames near the fuel filler area.
  • 🧤 Fuel vapors can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves and safety glasses.
  • ⛽ Replace the cap with the engine off and the vehicle parked safely.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Fuel filler cap - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Altima on level ground and turn the engine off.
  • 🔥 Let the area around the fuel door cool if the vehicle has been parked in direct sun.
  • 🔑 Keep the key away from the start button so the vehicle is not accidentally powered on.
  • 🧼 Wipe dirt away from the fuel door area with a clean microfiber towel before opening it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to press the rear edge of the fuel door inward, then release it so the door pops open.
  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses before touching the fuel cap.
  • Work slowly near fuel vapors.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to turn the old fuel cap counterclockwise until it comes free.
  • If the cap has a tether, inspect how it attaches to the fuel door or filler area before removing it.
  • A tether is the small plastic strap that keeps the cap from being dropped or lost.

Step 3: Remove the Fuel Cap Tether

  • Use your fingers to slide or unclip the tether from its mounting point.
  • If the tether is tight, use a clean microfiber towel for grip and gently work it loose by hand.
  • Do not use metal pry tools near the fuel filler opening.

Step 4: Inspect the Fuel Filler Neck

  • Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the sealing surface where the cap gasket touches.
  • The sealing surface is the smooth rim around the filler opening that the cap tightens against.
  • Check for dirt, rust, cracked plastic, or old rubber stuck to the filler neck.

Step 5: Install the New Fuel Cap Tether

  • Use your fingers to attach the new fuel cap tether to the original mounting point.
  • Make sure the tether does not twist or rub sharply against the fuel door hinge.
  • The cap should hang freely.

Step 6: Install the New Fuel Cap

  • Use your hand to place the new fuel cap squarely onto the filler neck.
  • Turn the cap clockwise until it clicks.
  • Continue turning until you hear at least one full click; this means the cap is sealed correctly.
  • No torque wrench is used for this cap; tighten by hand only.

Step 7: Close the Fuel Door

  • Use your hand to close the fuel door until it sits flush with the body.
  • Make sure the tether is not caught between the fuel door and the body.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Altima and confirm there is no fuel smell around the fuel door.
  • 💡 If the check engine light was on because of a loose or leaking cap, it may take several drive cycles to turn off on its own.
  • 🔎 If the warning stays on after several days of normal driving, scan for evaporative emissions codes before replacing more parts.
  • ⛽ After refueling, always tighten the cap until it clicks.
