Your Escape uses Ford’s Easy Fuel capless system, so there’s normally no traditional gas cap to replace. If you bought a screw-in “fuel cap” accessory (common when the seal is worn or you’re getting a Check Fuel Fill Inlet message), you can replace/install it in a couple minutes.

📋 Before You Begin

• Park your Escape on level ground and switch the engine off.
• Wipe around the fuel door area with a clean shop towel so dirt doesn’t fall into the filler.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the fuel door

• Open the fuel door by pressing the rear edge (use a flashlight if it’s dark).

Step 2: Inspect and clean the capless inlet

• Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
• Use a clean shop towel to gently wipe the visible sealing area of the filler opening.
• Don’t push debris down into the neck.

Step 3: Install (or replace) the screw-in fuel cap accessory

• Thread the new cap into the filler opening by hand.
• Tighten until it seats and clicks/stops firmly: Torque: Not applicable (turn until 1–2 clicks or fully seated).
• If removing an old accessory cap first, unthread it by hand and then install the new one the same way.

Step 4: Close the fuel door

• Close the fuel door and press lightly until it latches.

• Start your Escape and confirm there’s no Check Fuel Fill Inlet message.
• If you had a check-engine light related to EVAP, it may take a few drive cycles to clear on its own (or it can be cleared with a scan tool).
• If the message/light returns, the capless inlet seal or filler housing may be sticking or leaking and may need service.
