🔧 Front Window Regulator Replacement

The front window regulator moves the glass up and down inside each front door. If the window is slow, stuck, noisy, or has fallen into the door, the regulator assembly usually needs replacement. On your Ram, this is a door-panel job with careful glass handling.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting to avoid accidental window motor operation.
  • The door has a side airbag in many configurations; wait at least 2 minutes after battery disconnect before working inside the door.
  • Support the window glass before removing the regulator so it does not drop and crack.
  • Be careful with the door panel clips and moisture barrier so you do not break them or cause water leaks.
  • Keep hands clear of the scissor mechanism and moving glass edges.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • 1/4-inch extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Painter's tape
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator assembly - Qty: 2
  • Window motor - Qty: 2 if not included with regulator
  • Door panel clip set - Qty: 2 sets
  • Door moisture barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the affected window if it still moves. If it is stuck up or down, continue carefully.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Use painter's tape to hold the glass in the raised position before removing the regulator.
  • If both front regulators are being replaced, finish one door completely before starting the other.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the visible screws in the armrest and around the panel.
  • Use a trim panel removal tool to pop the door panel clips loose.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the door frame.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors for the switch panel and any speaker wiring.

Step 2: Remove the moisture barrier

  • Carefully peel back the plastic moisture barrier by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only if needed to lift old adhesive gently.
  • Keep the barrier clean so it can be reused or resealed.

Step 3: Secure the glass

  • Use painter's tape across the top of the door and over the glass to hold it fully up.
  • If the glass is already down, raise it by hand carefully and tape it in place.
  • Do not let the glass hang free.

Step 4: Remove the window motor and regulator fasteners

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet with extension to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove any motor or glass clamp fasteners if equipped.
  • Lower or raise the regulator as needed by hand to access all fasteners through the service openings.

Step 5: Separate the glass from the regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the glass-to-regulator clamp bolts.
  • Carefully slide the glass up and out of the regulator track.
  • Leave the glass taped in the up position.

Step 6: Remove the regulator assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the remaining regulator bolts.
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver if the motor must be transferred to the new regulator.
  • Rotate and maneuver the regulator out through the largest access opening in the door.

Step 7: Install the new regulator

  • Feed the new regulator into the door opening the same way the old one came out.
  • Start all bolts by hand first with a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet.
  • Reconnect the motor if it was removed.
  • Tighten regulator bolts to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 8: Reattach the glass

  • Lower the taped glass carefully into the regulator clamp.
  • Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp bolts evenly.
  • Tighten glass clamp bolts to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
  • Remove the painter's tape only after the glass is secure.

Step 9: Test window operation before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery temporarily.
  • Use the window switch to run the glass up and down several times.
  • Make sure the glass tracks straight and does not bind or click.
  • If it works correctly, disconnect the battery again before reassembling the door.

Step 10: Reinstall the moisture barrier and door panel

  • Press the moisture barrier back into place and reseal any torn sections with door moisture barrier adhesive.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the upper ledge first, then press the clips in with your hands.
  • Use a 7mm socket to reinstall all screws.
  • Tighten door panel screws to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Cycle the window fully down and fully up 3-5 times to help the system relearn stop points.
  • Listen for rubbing, popping, or uneven glass travel.
  • Check that the door panel sits flush and that the window seals properly.
  • Make sure there are no leftover screws or broken clips inside the door.
