🔧 Front Window Regulators - Replacement
The front window regulator is the mechanism that raises and lowers the glass inside each front door. On your Equinox, the inner door panel and moisture barrier must be removed first, then the glass is supported while the regulator and motor are swapped out.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. Front doors contain side-impact airbags and electrical connectors.
- Support the window glass before removing the regulator. If it drops, it can break or injure fingers.
- Keep the ignition off while door connectors are unplugged to avoid fault codes.
- Use care around the sharp inner door edges and vapor barrier adhesive.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Lower the front window halfway if it still operates. This makes glass support easier.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 5 minutes before unplugging door wiring.
- Have masking tape ready to secure the glass once it is loosened.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel
- Use a trim panel removal tool to pop off the door handle bezel and switch trim.
- Use a 7mm socket to remove the screws around the perimeter of the door panel.
- Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the top edge of the door.
- Unplug the window switch connector and any courtesy light connectors.
- Keep clips organized.
Step 2: Remove the moisture barrier
- Use a flathead screwdriver or your fingers to carefully lift the vapor barrier away from the door shell.
- Do not tear it. Reuse it if possible.
- Set the adhesive side cleanly so it can be reinstalled later.
Step 3: Support and secure the glass
- If the window is partly up, use masking tape across the glass and door frame to hold the glass in place.
- If the window is down, raise it by hand if possible and tape it securely.
- The glass must not move when the regulator is removed.
Step 4: Disconnect the glass from the regulator
- Use a 13mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the glass-to-regulator fasteners, depending on the exact hardware on the door.
- Slide the glass upward and secure it with more masking tape.
- Never let the glass hang loose.
Step 5: Remove the regulator and motor assembly
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver or 10mm socket to remove the regulator and motor mounting fasteners.
- Unplug the window motor connector.
- Rotate and maneuver the regulator assembly out through the large service opening in the door.
Step 6: Install the new regulator
- Feed the new regulator assembly into the door through the service opening.
- Use a Torx T30 screwdriver or 10mm socket to install the mounting fasteners finger-tight first.
- Reconnect the motor connector.
- Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs) for typical regulator fasteners unless your replacement assembly specifies otherwise.
Step 7: Reattach the glass
- Lower the glass carefully into the regulator clamps.
- Use a 10mm socket or 13mm socket to tighten the glass clamp fasteners.
- Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs).
- Remove the masking tape only after the glass is firmly secured.
Step 8: Test the window operation before reassembly
- Reconnect the battery temporarily and cycle the window up and down with the switch.
- Check for smooth travel, even alignment, and no clicking or binding.
- If the glass is misaligned, loosen and reposition before reinstalling the door panel.
- Disconnect the battery again before final reassembly if needed.
Step 9: Reinstall the door panel
- Press the vapor barrier back into place using the original adhesive or new adhesive.
- Reconnect all electrical plugs.
- Hook the door panel onto the top edge first, then press the clips into place.
- Install the screws with a 7mm socket.
- Reinstall the trim pieces and handle bezel.
- Torque to 2-3 Nm (18-27 in-lbs) for door panel screws.
✅ After Repair
- Cycle the window fully up and down 3-5 times.
- Check that the glass seals evenly at the top.
- Listen for scraping, clicking, or binding.
- If the window auto-up feature does not work, relearn it by fully lowering the window, then fully raising it and holding the switch for 2-3 seconds.
