🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Window Regulator Replacement

Your Grand Cherokee’s front window regulator is the cable-and-track assembly that moves the glass up and down. Replacing it means removing the front door trim panel, securing the glass, swapping the regulator (often with the motor), then reassembling and re-initializing the auto-up/down function.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours (per door)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable before unplugging door wiring to reduce the chance of accidental airbag/short issues.
  • ⚠️ Support the window glass securely—glass can drop suddenly when the regulator is unbolted.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground with the ignition OFF and key away from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Use gloves—door inner edges can be sharp.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Trim removal tool set
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Socket set (metric)
  • 7mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Extension (3"–6")
  • Torx T20 bit
  • Torx T25 bit
  • Torque wrench (in-lb)
  • Painters tape (1"–2")
  • Plastic razor blade scraper
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • 12mm wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator assembly - Qty: 1
  • Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included with regulator)
  • Door trim panel retainer clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Door vapor barrier butyl tape - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and open the front door fully.
  • Lower the window about halfway (if it still moves) so the glass clamp bolts are easier to reach later.
  • Disconnect the battery negative cable using a 12mm wrench and wait 2 minutes.
  • If the window is stuck fully up or fully down, you can still do this—just expect an extra step to free/position the glass by hand.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door switch bezel

  • Use a trim removal tool set to carefully pry up the window switch bezel.
  • Unplug the electrical connectors by pressing the lock tabs with a small flathead screwdriver.
  • Go slow—plastic tabs break easily.

Step 2: Remove screws holding the door trim panel

  • Remove the screw(s) behind the interior door handle area using a Phillips screwdriver or Torx T20 bit (fastener type can vary by door/option).
  • Remove lower/edge screws using a 7mm socket on a ratchet (3/8").
  • Place screws in a tray so none are lost.

Step 3: Remove the door trim panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set to pop the trim panel clips around the perimeter.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect any remaining wiring connectors and the inner handle cable (use a small flathead screwdriver to release the cable housing clip if needed).

Step 4: Remove and save the vapor barrier

  • Carefully peel back the vapor barrier (plastic sheet) using a plastic razor blade scraper.
  • If the butyl adhesive stretches, roll it off with your fingers and plan to reseal with door vapor barrier butyl tape.
  • Don’t tear it—water leaks happen.

Step 5: Secure the window glass

  • Apply multiple strips of painters tape (1"–2") from the outside of the glass over the door frame to hold the glass up.
  • If the glass is not fully up, gently slide it by hand to the full-up position and add more tape.

Step 6: Detach the glass from the regulator

  • Look through the door access holes and locate the glass-to-regulator clamp bolts.
  • Loosen/remove the clamp bolts using an 8mm socket and a ratchet (3/8") with an extension (3"–6").
  • Torque to OEM specification during reassembly using a torque wrench (in-lb).

Step 7: Unplug the regulator motor and remove the regulator assembly

  • Unplug the regulator motor connector (release the lock tab using a small flathead screwdriver if tight).
  • Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8").
  • Remove any additional fasteners (some doors use Torx) using a Torx T25 bit.
  • Carefully maneuver the regulator out through the large access opening.

Step 8: Move the motor over (only if your new regulator does not include it)

  • Remove the motor screws using a Torx T25 bit.
  • Transfer the motor to the new regulator and tighten fasteners using a torque wrench (in-lb) to OEM specification.
  • Keep fingers clear of the gear.

Step 9: Install the new regulator

  • Position the new regulator into the door and start bolts by hand.
  • Tighten regulator bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet (3/8"), then finish with a torque wrench (in-lb) to OEM specification.
  • Plug in the motor connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Lower the glass carefully into the regulator clamps (remove some tape as needed, but keep control of the glass).
  • Install/tighten clamp bolts using an 8mm socket and ratchet (3/8"), then finish with a torque wrench (in-lb) to OEM specification.
  • Remove all painters tape (1"–2") from the glass.

Step 11: Re-seal the vapor barrier and reinstall the door trim panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place; add door vapor barrier butyl tape anywhere it won’t stick.
  • Reconnect wiring and the handle cable.
  • Hang the door trim panel on the upper ledge, then push clips in around the edges by hand.
  • Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, or Torx T20 bit as removed, and tighten snugly.

Step 12: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 12mm wrench.

âś… After Repair

  • Turn ignition ON and test the window up/down operation.
  • If auto-up/down doesn’t work: fully close the window, then hold the switch in the “up” position for ~2–3 seconds; fully open it, then hold the switch “down” for ~2–3 seconds.
  • Check for wind noise/water leaks: confirm the vapor barrier is fully sealed.
  • Listen for clicking/grinding—if present, recheck glass seating in the clamps.
