🔧 Compass - Front Window Regulator Replacement

The front window regulator is the mechanism that lifts and lowers the glass. When it fails, the window may move crooked, get stuck, make grinding noises, or drop into the door.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours (one door)

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support the window glass before unbolting the regulator so it doesn’t drop and shatter.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the scissor/cable mechanism; it can pinch hard.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable before unplugging door electrical connectors.
  • ⚠️ Work on level ground with the key out of the ignition.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Extension bar (3 in)
  • Pick tool
  • Painters tape (1.5 in)
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Magnetic pickup tool
  • Torque wrench (5-50 Nm range)
  • 12V memory saver

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator (correct side) - Qty: 1
  • Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included or if your motor is bad)
  • Door panel retainer clips - Qty: 6-10 (as needed)
  • Butyl door vapor barrier adhesive - Qty: 1 (as needed)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park the Compass on a flat surface and open the front door fully.
  • Lower the window if it still moves; it helps align the glass clamps.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it.
  • Tip: Take photos of connector locations first.
  • Quick questions so I give the exact procedure (no guessing):
  • 🧩 Which front door are you doing: driver or passenger?
  • 🧩 Are you replacing regulator only or the regulator with motor (complete assembly)?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the door trim panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry up the window switch panel (the plastic piece with the switches).
  • Unplug the switch connectors using a pick tool to lift the locking tabs (a locking tab is a small plastic catch that must be released before the plug comes out).
  • Remove visible screws in the armrest/handle area using a Phillips screwdriver and/or Torx T20 bit (fastener type can vary by build).
  • Use a trim removal tool set to pop the door panel clips loose around the perimeter.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors and set the panel aside.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier

  • Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier using a trim removal tool set.
  • If the sticky sealant stretches, use butyl door vapor barrier adhesive during reassembly to reseal it.
  • Tip: Don’t rip it—water leaks can happen.

Step 3: Secure the window glass

  • Reconnect the window switch temporarily (if needed) and reconnect the battery long enough to move the glass until the regulator-to-glass clamp bolts are accessible through the door openings.
  • Disconnect the battery again using a 10mm socket.
  • Use painters tape (1.5 in) to tape the glass to the door frame (2-3 long strips), or have a helper hold the glass from the top.

Step 4: Detach the glass from the regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket (common) to loosen/remove the bolts that clamp the glass to the regulator sliders.
  • Gently push the glass fully up by hand and add more painters tape (1.5 in) to hold it in the full-up position.

Step 5: Remove the regulator and (if needed) motor

  • Unplug the window motor connector using a pick tool to release the lock.
  • Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • If your replacement is regulator-only, remove the motor screws/bolts using a Torx T30 bit (or the fastener present on your unit) and transfer the motor to the new regulator.
  • Carefully maneuver the regulator out through the largest access opening in the door.
  • Tip: Keep bolts in a labeled cup.

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Slide the new regulator into the door and align it to the mounting holes.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then snug using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Reconnect the motor electrical connector.
  • Torque to factory spec using a torque wrench (5-50 Nm range).

Step 7: Reattach the glass

  • Remove enough painters tape (1.5 in) to allow the glass to lower carefully into the regulator clamps.
  • Install and tighten the glass clamp bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to factory spec using a torque wrench (5-50 Nm range).

Step 8: Function test before reassembly

  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Temporarily plug in the window switch and run the window up/down while watching the regulator through the access hole.
  • Look for binding, crooked travel, clicking, or the glass pulling out of the front/rear run channel.
  • Disconnect the battery again using a 10mm socket before finishing assembly.

Step 9: Reinstall the vapor barrier and door panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place; use butyl door vapor barrier adhesive if the seal isn’t sticky.
  • Reconnect all door electrical connectors.
  • Hook the top of the door panel onto the window ledge, then press the panel in to engage the clips.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips screwdriver and/or Torx T20 bit.
  • Reinstall the switch panel using a trim removal tool set to press it in evenly.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Test the window from both the driver master switch and the door switch.
  • If one-touch or auto-up/down acts weird, perform a window relearn: hold the switch fully down for 5 seconds, then fully up for 5 seconds.
  • Check that the door locks, mirror (if equipped), and speaker work before you fully button up.
  • Listen for wind noise on a short drive; it can indicate the vapor barrier isn’t sealed.
