  • Park your Acadia on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Lower the window to about halfway if it still moves (this usually exposes the glass-to-regulator fasteners).
  • If you might unplug any yellow connectors, disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket and wait 2 minutes.
  • Take photos before unplugging anything.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop off the small trim covers near the door pull/handle area.
  • Remove the exposed screws using a 7mm socket and Torx T20 screwdriver (your door may use one or the other depending on location).
  • Use the trim removal tool set (plastic) to release the panel clips around the outer edge of the door panel.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug electrical connectors using the pick tool to release any locking tabs. Don’t pull on the wires.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier (water shield)

  • Peel the vapor barrier back carefully by hand; use needle-nose pliers only if a clip resists.
  • If the butyl adhesive strings out, plan to reseal with butyl tape during reassembly.

Step 3: Secure the window glass

  • Use painters tape (2" wide) to tape the glass to the door frame (run multiple strips from outside glass over the top and down the inside).
  • If the regulator has failed and the glass is loose, hold the glass fully up and add more tape.

Step 4: Separate the glass from the regulator

  • Locate the two glass-to-regulator clamp/bolts through the access holes in the door inner panel using a flashlight.
  • Loosen/remove the fasteners using a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Confirm the glass is free from the regulator by gently wiggling the glass (keep it taped up).

Step 5: Unplug and remove the regulator/motor assembly

  • Unplug the window motor connector (use the pick tool to lift the lock if needed).
  • Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, 1/4" ratchet, and 3" extension for ratchet.
  • If your replacement regulator does not include the motor, remove the motor screws using a Torx T30 screwdriver and transfer the motor.
  • Carefully work the regulator out through the largest access opening. Rotate it; don’t force it.

Step 6: Install the new regulator (and motor if needed)

  • Slide the new regulator into the door cavity and align the mounting holes.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten with a 10mm socket and 1/4" ratchet.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) for the regulator/motor fasteners (typical GM door hardware spec).
  • Plug in the motor connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Remove some painters tape (2" wide) so the glass can lower slightly into the regulator clamps.
  • Align the glass in the regulator clamps and install/tighten the glass fasteners using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 8: Function check before reassembly

  • If the battery was disconnected, reconnect the negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn ignition ON and cycle the window up/down using the window switch.
  • Listen for binding/clicking and watch for the glass tilting. If it tilts, loosen the glass fasteners with a 10mm socket, center the glass in the run channels, then retighten.

Step 9: Reinstall vapor barrier and door trim panel

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place; add butyl tape anywhere it no longer sticks.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors.
  • Hang the panel on the top window ledge, then press the clips in around the perimeter using your hands.
  • Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket and Torx T20 screwdriver.

āœ… After Repair

  • Cycle the window fully down and fully up 3 times to confirm smooth operation.
  • If auto-up/down acts weird, do a relearn: with ignition ON, hold the switch to fully DOWN for 5 seconds, then fully UP for 5 seconds.
  • Verify the door handle, lock switch, mirror switch, and speaker all work.
  • Check for wind noise on a short drive; mis-seated door panel/vapor barrier can cause it.
