🔧 Grand Cherokee - Front Window Regulator Replacement

The front window regulator is the cable/track assembly that moves the glass up and down. Replacement involves removing the front door trim panel, securing the glass, swapping the regulator (and motor if included), then reassembling and testing.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-3 hours per door

Quick question (so I match parts): Are you replacing the driver front regulator, the passenger front regulator, or both?

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging door wiring to reduce risk of accidental shorts and warning lights.
  • ⚠️ Support the window glass securely before loosening the glass-to-regulator clamps; the glass can drop suddenly.
  • ⚠️ Do not peel the vapor barrier (plastic sheet) off aggressively; reseal it fully to prevent water leaks into the cabin.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves—door inner metal edges can be very sharp.

  • Torque wrench (ft-lb, 10–80 ft-lb range)
  • Work light
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator assembly - Qty: 1 (choose Driver or Passenger)
  • Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1 (only if not included with regulator)
  • Door trim panel clip set - Qty: 1 (recommended)
  • Butyl seal tape (vapor barrier adhesive) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, ignition OFF, key away from the vehicle.
  • Lower the affected window to about halfway (if it still moves) so you can access the glass clamp bolts through the door access holes.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • Have painters tape ready to hold the glass up in the frame.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a pick tool and small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the small trim covers hiding screws (typically in the pull handle and behind the inner door handle bezel).
  • Remove the exposed screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver and/or Torx T30 screwdriver (fastener type can vary by door location).
  • Use a trim removal tool set to pop the door panel clips around the perimeter.
  • Lift the door panel upward to unhook it from the top ledge by the window.
  • Unplug the window switch panel and any courtesy light connectors by releasing the lock tabs with a pick tool.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier (water shield) carefully

  • Use a trim removal tool set to peel the vapor barrier back slowly.
  • If the butyl adhesive strings or won’t reseal later, plan to replace it with butyl seal tape.
  • Keep the barrier clean for a good seal.

Step 3: Support the window glass

  • If the regulator still works: temporarily reconnect the switch, reconnect the battery briefly, key ON, and position the glass so the clamp bolts are visible through the access holes; then key OFF and disconnect the battery again using a 10mm socket.
  • Hold the glass fully UP in the frame and secure it with multiple strips of painters tape (1.5") from the outside of the glass over the door frame to the inside.
  • If the glass is loose: have a helper hold it while you tape it.

Step 4: Detach the glass from the regulator

  • Locate the glass-to-regulator clamp fasteners through the door access holes.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet to loosen the clamp bolts enough to free the glass from the regulator sliders.
  • Confirm the glass is still firmly taped and supported before moving on.
  • When reassembling: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb) for typical M6 glass clamp bolts.

Step 5: Unplug and remove the regulator (and motor if included)

  • Unplug the regulator motor connector using a pick tool to release the lock tab.
  • Remove the regulator mounting bolts using a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • If the motor is separate from the regulator on your replacement setup, remove the motor fasteners using a Torx T30 screwdriver.
  • Carefully snake the regulator assembly out through the main access opening in the door.
  • When reassembling regulator-to-door bolts: Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb) for typical M6 fasteners.

Step 6: Install the new regulator and connect wiring

  • Feed the new regulator into the door and align it to the mounting holes.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand, then tighten using a 10mm socket and ratchet.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb) for typical M6 regulator mounting bolts.
  • If you transferred the motor: install it with a Torx T30 screwdriver and tighten evenly.
  • Reconnect the motor electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reattach the glass and verify smooth travel

  • Remove some tape so the glass can move slightly but stays supported.
  • Align the glass into the regulator clamps, then snug the clamp bolts using a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lb) on the glass clamp bolts.
  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.
  • Key ON and test the window switch for smooth up/down movement while watching the tracks.
  • If it binds, stop immediately and re-check glass seating in the clamps and regulator alignment.

Step 8: Reseal the vapor barrier and reinstall the door panel

  • Disconnect the battery again with a 10mm socket before final reassembly if you’ll be unplugging/plugging connectors.
  • Press the vapor barrier back into the butyl; add butyl seal tape where needed to fully seal the perimeter.
  • Reconnect all door panel connectors (window switch, courtesy light).
  • Hook the panel onto the top ledge first, then press clips in around the edges by hand.
  • Reinstall screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver / Torx T30 screwdriver and reinstall trim covers.
  • Reconnect the battery using a 10mm socket.

Step 9: Initialize auto up/down (if equipped)

  • Key ON.
  • Run the window all the way DOWN and keep holding the switch for 2–3 seconds.
  • Run the window all the way UP and keep holding the switch for 2–3 seconds.
  • This often restores one-touch function.

✅ After Repair

  • Cycle the window 10 times and listen for clicking/popping.
  • Check the window seals: verify the glass meets the weatherstrip evenly at the top.
  • Water test: pour a small amount of water along the outer belt molding and confirm no water leaks inside the door panel area (vapor barrier must be sealed).
  • If the window moves backward/forward or rattles, re-check glass clamp tightness and regulator mounting bolts.
