  • Park on level ground and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Lower the affected window to about halfway if it still moves (this lines up the glass clamps).
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • Know this term: the vapor barrier is the plastic sheet behind the door panel that keeps water off the electronics.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a trim removal tool set (plastic) to gently pry up the window switch panel.
  • Unplug the switch connectors using a pick tool to release the tabs (press the tab, then pull—don’t yank wires).
  • Remove the hidden screws:
    • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw(s) behind the inner door handle trim.
    • Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw in/near the armrest pocket (if equipped).
  • Use the trim removal tool set (plastic) to pop the door panel clips around the edges.
  • Lift the door panel straight up to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect remaining connectors and unclip the handle cable(s) (note routing for reassembly). Take a quick photo first.

Step 2: Remove the vapor barrier (plastic sheet)

  • Peel the vapor barrier back slowly by hand.
  • If the sticky butyl adhesive strings, use a razor blade or plastic scraper to separate it cleanly.
  • Do not tear the barrier—keep it reusable.

Step 3: Secure the window glass

  • If the glass is still attached to the regulator, reposition it so the glass clamp bolts are visible through the access holes.
  • Use painters tape (2") to tape the glass to the door frame (run multiple strips from outside glass, over the top, to inside).
  • If the regulator has failed and the glass is loose, hold the glass fully up by hand, then tape it securely in the full-up position.

Step 4: Disconnect the regulator/motor and unbolt the glass from the regulator

  • Unplug the window motor connector (use a pick tool to release the lock tab if needed).
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 6" extension to loosen/remove the two glass clamp bolts/nuts.
  • Assumption (best-effort): Typical clamp fasteners torque is Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs) on reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the old regulator assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Carefully maneuver the regulator out through the large door opening (rotate it as needed).
  • Keep bolts organized in a magnetic parts tray.

Step 6: Install the new regulator

  • Slide the new regulator into the door and line up the mounting holes.
  • Start all regulator bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten using a 10mm socket, then final tighten with a torque wrench (5–25 Nm range).
  • Assumption (best-effort): Regulator mounting bolts typically tighten to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reattach the glass to the regulator

  • Remove some painters tape (2") so the glass can move slightly, but keep it supported.
  • Lower the glass carefully into the regulator clamps (by hand).
  • Install/tighten the glass clamp fasteners using a 10mm socket, then final tighten with the torque wrench (5–25 Nm range).
  • Assumption (best-effort): Glass clamp fasteners: Torque to 7.5 Nm (66 in-lbs).

Step 8: Quick function test (before reassembly)

  • Reconnect the window motor connector.
  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Temporarily plug in the window switch and test up/down while watching the regulator for smooth movement.
  • If it binds, stop immediately and check that the glass is seated straight in the run channels.
  • Disconnect the battery negative again with a 10mm socket before putting the door back together.

Step 9: Reinstall the vapor barrier

  • Press the vapor barrier back into place.
  • If the adhesive no longer sticks well, apply butyl tape (part) around the perimeter and press firmly.

Step 10: Reinstall the door panel

  • Reconnect all electrical connectors and reattach handle cable(s) exactly as routed.
  • Hook the top of the door panel onto the window ledge, then press the clips in around the edges.
  • Reinstall screws using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the switch panel: press it in evenly until it clicks.

âś… After Repair

  • Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Initialize auto up/down (common Subaru method):
    • Turn ignition ON.
    • Fully lower the window, then hold the switch DOWN for ~3 seconds.
    • Fully raise the window, then hold the switch UP for ~3 seconds.
  • Test window operation from both the door switch and the driver master switch.
  • Listen for rubbing or clicking—if present, recheck glass alignment and clip seating.
