🔧 Front Window Regulator - Replacement

Replacing the front window regulator on your Ram means removing the door trim panel, disconnecting the glass from the regulator, and swapping the regulator/motor assembly. This is a common repair when the window is slow, stuck, crooked, or makes grinding noises.

Assumption: This procedure covers one front door at a time. If both front regulators are being replaced, repeat the steps on the other side.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours per door

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The door contains electrical connectors and a side airbag circuit.
  • Keep hands clear of the window glass and regulator tracks. The glass can drop suddenly.
  • Support the glass with tape before removing the regulator bolts.
  • Do not turn the ignition on with door connectors unplugged unless needed for testing.
  • Use care around the door panel clips; they break easily if pried too hard.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch ratchet
  • 1/4-inch extension
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Flat plastic pry tool
  • Painter’s tape
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Torque wrench

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator assembly - Qty: 1 per door
  • Front window regulator motor - Qty: 1 per door if not included with regulator
  • Door panel clips - Qty: 1 set
  • Moisture barrier adhesive - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the window far enough to access the glass clamp bolts if the window still moves.
  • If the window is stuck up, you will need to remove the inner door access cover and work through the service opening.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes before removing the door panel.
  • Have painter’s tape ready to hold the glass in the raised position.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect power

  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Wait at least 2 minutes before touching any door connectors.

Step 2: Remove the door trim panel

  • Use a trim panel removal tool and Phillips screwdriver to remove the visible screws in the armrest, pull handle, and lower door area.
  • Use a flat plastic pry tool to release the door panel clips around the perimeter.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Unplug the switch connector and any courtesy light connectors.

Step 3: Remove the moisture barrier

  • Use a flat plastic pry tool to carefully peel back the moisture barrier.
  • Keep the barrier clean for reuse.

Step 4: Secure the glass

  • Raise the glass fully by hand if it still moves.
  • Use painter’s tape across the top of the door frame to hold the glass in place.
  • If the glass is already stuck down, support it before loosening any regulator bolts.

Step 5: Disconnect the glass from the regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket or 8mm socket to remove the glass-to-regulator clamp bolts through the access holes.
  • Carefully separate the glass from the regulator track.
  • Move the glass fully up and tape it securely if needed.

Step 6: Remove the regulator assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch extension to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Disconnect the window motor electrical connector.
  • Angle the regulator out through the large service opening in the door.

Step 7: Install the new regulator

  • Use a 10mm socket to position and install the new regulator into the door.
  • Install the mounting bolts finger-tight first.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) unless your replacement regulator instructions specify otherwise.
  • Reconnect the window motor connector.

Step 8: Reattach the glass

  • Lower the taped glass carefully into the regulator clamp.
  • Use a 10mm socket to install and tighten the glass clamp bolts.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Remove the painter’s tape only after the glass is secured.

Step 9: Test the window before reassembly

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Turn the ignition on and test the window up and down.
  • Make sure the glass moves straight and seals correctly at the top.
  • If the one-touch feature acts strange, cycle the window fully down and fully up several times.

Step 10: Reassemble the door

  • Reinstall the moisture barrier.
  • Reconnect all switch and light connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the upper ledge first, then press the clips back into place.
  • Reinstall all screws using a Phillips screwdriver and any trim fasteners.

✅ After Repair

  • Cycle the window fully up and down 5-10 times.
  • Check that the glass seals evenly against the weatherstrip.
  • Listen for rubbing, clicking, or binding.
  • If the auto-up feature is not working correctly, perform the window calibration by holding the switch in the full up position for a few seconds after closure, then full down, then full up again.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$700 per door (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $120-$260 per door (parts only)

You Save: $230-$440 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-4 hours.
