🔧 Front Window Regulator - Replacement

The front window regulator holds the glass and moves it up and down inside the door. On your Equinox, the door trim, moisture barrier, and glass must come off to access the regulator, then the regulator and motor can be swapped as a unit if needed.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The front door has side airbag-related wiring.
  • Support the window glass before removing the regulator. A loose glass can drop suddenly.
  • Work with the ignition off and key away from the vehicle.
  • Use care with the door panel clips. They can break easily.
  • Handle the moisture barrier carefully. You will need it sealed again to prevent water leaks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Extension bar
  • Trim panel tool
  • Flat blade screwdriver
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Torx T30 screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Torque wrench
  • Painter's tape
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front window regulator - Qty: 2 if replacing both front doors
  • Front window regulator motor - Qty: 2 if the motor is separate and being replaced
  • Door panel clip set - Qty: 1
  • Door vapor barrier adhesive/sealant - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the window glass partway if it still works. If it is stuck, you can still proceed.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 10 minutes before removing door trim.
  • If your window is stuck open, tape the glass to the door frame with painter's tape before removing anything.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the front door trim panel

  • Use a 7mm socket to remove the screws in the door pull and lower trim area.
  • Use a trim panel tool to pop the door panel clips free around the edge.
  • Lift the panel upward to release it from the window ledge.
  • Disconnect the electrical connectors for the window switch and any courtesy light.

Step 2: Remove the moisture barrier

  • Use a flat blade screwdriver to gently lift the edge of the vapor barrier.
  • Peel it back slowly so you can reuse it.
  • Keep the adhesive clean and sticky.

Step 3: Support and remove the window glass

  • Use painter's tape to hold the glass in the raised position if it is still movable.
  • Remove the access covers in the inner door skin.
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the glass-to-regulator fasteners through the service holes.
  • Carefully lift the glass straight up and out of the door opening.
  • Set the glass somewhere safe and upright.

Step 4: Remove the regulator and motor assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet with an extension bar to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • If equipped, use a Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the motor fasteners from the regulator.
  • Guide the assembly out through the large door opening.
  • Rotate the assembly until it clears the door shell.

Step 5: Install the new regulator

  • Position the new regulator inside the door shell.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first, then snug them with the 10mm socket.
  • If the motor was removed, install it now and tighten the Torx T30 fasteners.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) unless your replacement part instructions specify otherwise.

Step 6: Reinstall the window glass

  • Lower the glass carefully back into the door opening.
  • Align the glass with the regulator clamps.
  • Use the 10mm socket to tighten the glass fasteners.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 7: Test the window before reassembly

  • Reconnect the window switch connector temporarily.
  • Reconnect the battery negative cable briefly.
  • Use the switch to run the window fully up and down.
  • Check for smooth travel, binding, or noise.
  • Disconnect the battery again before finishing the trim work.

Step 8: Reassemble the door

  • Reinstall the moisture barrier and press the edges firmly into the original adhesive.
  • Reconnect all door panel electrical connectors.
  • Hang the door panel on the upper window ledge.
  • Press the clips into place around the perimeter.
  • Reinstall the screws with the 7mm socket.
  • Torque to 3 Nm (27 in-lbs) for small trim screws.

✅ After Repair

  • Cycle the window several times and make sure it stops correctly at the top and bottom.
  • Check that the door lock, mirror, and window switch still work.
  • Listen for rattles. A loose clip or vapor barrier can make noise.
  • Verify there are no water leaks after the next wash or rain.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $350-$750 per door (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $80-$220 per door (parts only)

You Save: $270-$530 per door by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-2.5 hours per door.
