🔧 Front Wheel Hub Bearing Assembly - Replacement

On your Rogue, the front wheel bearing is serviced as a complete hub bearing assembly. That means you replace the whole hub unit instead of pressing a bearing in and out. This job involves the brake, axle nut, and steering knuckle area, so take your time and keep everything clean.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the vehicle with jack stands on solid ground. Never work with only a jack.
  • Use the parking brake and chock the rear wheels before lifting the front.
  • The axle nut is very tight. Keep the vehicle on the ground when loosening and tightening it.
  • Do not hang the brake caliper by the hose. Support it with wire or a hook.
  • Use caution around the ABS wheel speed sensor wiring near the hub.
  • No battery disconnect is normally required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Caliper bracket bolts - Qty: 2
  • Wheel speed sensor bolt - Qty: 1
  • Brake cleaner - Qty: 1 can

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Loosen the lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Loosen the axle nut with the vehicle on the ground.
  • If the axle splines are stuck in the hub, apply penetrating oil and let it soak.
  • Have a new axle nut ready before starting.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the wheel and axle nut

  • Use a lug wrench to crack loose the wheel lug nuts.
  • Use a 32mm axle nut socket and breaker bar to loosen the axle nut while the Rogue is still on the ground.
  • Do not remove the axle nut yet.

Step 2: Raise and secure the vehicle

  • Use a floor jack to lift the front of the Rogue.
  • Place jack stands under the proper front support points.
  • Remove the wheel completely.

Step 3: Remove the brake caliper and bracket

  • Use a 14mm socket or 17mm socket to remove the caliper slide bolts, depending on the bracket setup.
  • Lift the caliper off and hang it with a bungee cord or wire hook.
  • Use an 18mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the brake rotor.
  • Keep the brake hose relaxed.

Step 4: Remove the axle nut and free the axle from the hub

  • Use the 32mm axle nut socket to remove the axle nut.
  • Push the axle splines inward slightly from the hub.
  • If stuck, use a rubber mallet and light taps on the axle end.
  • Do not hammer the threads directly.

Step 5: Disconnect the wheel speed sensor

  • Locate the ABS wheel speed sensor wire at the hub.
  • Use a 10mm socket or flat-blade screwdriver to remove any retaining bolt or clip.
  • Move the sensor wire out of the way.

Step 6: Remove the hub bearing assembly

  • From the back side of the steering knuckle, use a 14mm socket to remove the hub mounting bolts.
  • If the hub is rusted in place, tap around the flange with a hammer and punch.
  • Remove the hub bearing assembly from the knuckle.
  • Work evenly around the flange if it is seized.

Step 7: Clean the mounting surface

  • Use brake cleaner and a rag to clean the knuckle hub bore.
  • Remove rust and debris so the new hub seats flat.
  • Inspect the axle splines and knuckle for damage.

Step 8: Install the new hub bearing assembly

  • Position the new hub assembly into the knuckle.
  • Install the hub bolts by hand first.
  • Use a 14mm socket to tighten the hub bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 78 Nm (58 ft-lbs).

Step 9: Reassemble the brake and axle

  • Slide the axle back into the new hub splines.
  • Reinstall the brake rotor.
  • Install the caliper bracket with a 18mm socket.
  • Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
  • Reinstall the caliper with a 14mm socket or 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 31 Nm (23 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Install the new axle nut and wheel

  • Install the new axle nut by hand.
  • Reinstall the wheel and snug the lug nuts.
  • Lower the Rogue so the tire touches the ground enough to keep the hub from spinning.
  • Use a 32mm axle nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the axle nut.
  • Torque to 217 Nm (160 ft-lbs).
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Final checks

  • Spin the wheel by hand and listen for rubbing.
  • Check the ABS wire routing and clips.
  • Press the brake pedal several times before moving the vehicle.

✅ After Repair

  • Road test at low speed first.
  • Listen for humming, grinding, or clicking.
  • Check that the ABS warning light stays off.
  • Recheck axle nut and wheel lug torque after the test drive.
  • If the steering wheel pulls or the brake pedal feels odd, stop and inspect the assembly.
