🔧 Wheel Bearings - Hub Assembly Replacement
On your Corolla, the wheel bearing is typically replaced as part of the hub bearing assembly. This job requires removing the brake parts, axle nut, and hub fasteners, then swapping the entire bearing unit and reassembling everything to spec.
Assumption: Front hub bearing assembly replacement. Rear hub-bearing replacement is similar, but the knuckle access may differ.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours per side
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Support the car securely on jack stands before removing the wheel.
- Do not press the brake pedal with the caliper removed.
- The axle nut is very tight; keep the car on the ground for loosening and tightening.
- Use a new axle nut. It is a one-time-use locking nut.
- If your car has ABS, handle the wheel speed sensor wire carefully so it does not get damaged.
- Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

- Remove the brake rotor by hand. If stuck, tap it with a rubber mallet.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the hose.
Step 4: Remove the axle nut and sensor hardware
- Finish removing the axle nut with a 21mm socket.
- Use a 10mm socket and flat trim tool to remove any sensor wire brackets on the knuckle.
- If the ABS sensor wire is clipped to the knuckle, release it carefully with needle-nose pliers.
Step 5: Remove the hub bearing assembly
- Use a 17mm socket to remove the hub/bearing mounting bolts from the back side of the knuckle.
- Apply penetrating oil if the bolts are rusty.
- Pull the hub assembly out of the knuckle.
- If it is seized, use a hub puller or slide hammer to free it.
- Work evenly so the knuckle is not damaged.
Step 6: Install the new bearing assembly
- Clean the mounting surface with brake cleaner.
- Set the new wheel bearing and hub assembly in place.
- Install the mounting bolts by hand first.

- Reinstall the caliper bracket with a 17mm socket.
- Torque to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the caliper with a 14mm socket.
- Torque to 34 Nm (25 ft-lbs).
- Lower the car until the tire touches the ground enough to keep it from spinning.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the axle nut.
- Torque to 216 Nm (159 ft-lbs).
- Stake or lock the new axle nut if the replacement nut design requires it.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel
- Reinstall the wheel with a 21mm socket.
- Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
- Fully lower the car and remove the jack stands.
✅ After Repair
