Assumption: This is the front wheel bearing/hub assembly on your Tacoma. The front bearing is replaced as a complete hub unit.

🔧 Wheel Bearing - Front Hub Replacement

The front wheel bearing on your Tacoma is not serviced as a loose bearing. You replace the entire hub assembly, then reinstall the brake parts and wheel. If you meant the rear wheel bearing, that procedure is different.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Support the truck with jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • Use wheel chocks on the opposite wheels.
  • Do not let the brake caliper hang by the hose.
  • Protect the ABS sensor wire and connector from damage.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 21mm socket
  • 19mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • 12mm socket

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the truck and remove the wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to loosen the lug nuts.
  • Raise the truck with a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts and wheel.

Step 2: Remove the brake caliper and bracket

  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Remove the caliper and bracket together, then hang it with a bungee cord.
  • Torque on reassembly: 101 Nm (75 ft-lbs) for the caliper bracket bolts.
  • Do not let the brake hose stretch.

Step 3: Remove the rotor

  • Pull the rotor off.
  • If stuck, tap it gently with a rubber mallet.

Step 4: Free the ABS sensor wire

  • Use a trim clip tool to release any wire clips.
  • Unplug the ABS sensor connector carefully.
  • Do not tug on the wire.

Step 5: Remove the hub bolts

  • Use a 17mm socket to remove the hub mounting bolts from the back of the knuckle.
  • Apply penetrating oil first if the bolts are rusty.
  • Torque on reassembly: 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs) for the hub bolts.

Step 6: Remove the old hub assembly

  • Pull the hub assembly straight out.
  • If it is seized, tap around the hub flange with a rubber mallet.
  • Clean the mounting surface with a wire brush.

Step 7: Install the new hub assembly

  • Position the new hub assembly in place.
  • Start all bolts by hand, then tighten with a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 127 Nm (94 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the ABS sensor and secure the wire in the clips.

Step 8: Reinstall the rotor, caliper, and wheel

  • Install the rotor.
  • Reinstall the caliper bracket with a 17mm socket.
  • Torque to 101 Nm (75 ft-lbs).
  • Install the wheel and hand-tighten the lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the truck and torque the lug nuts to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs) in a star pattern.

âś… After Repair

  • Spin the wheel by hand and make sure it turns smoothly.
  • Start the truck and confirm the ABS light stays off.
  • Test-drive slowly and listen for noise.
  • Recheck lug nut torque after the road test.
