🔧 Front Turn Signal Bulbs - Bulb Replacement

Replacing the front turn signal bulbs on your Jetta is a quick job if your car has the factory halogen headlamps. You’ll access the bulb socket from behind the headlamp, swap the amber bulb, and then verify the flash rate and lamp function.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the lights off and remove the key before starting.
  • Let the headlamp housing cool if the lights were just on.
  • Do not touch the glass on the new bulb with bare fingers.
  • If your Jetta has LED front signals, this procedure does not apply.
  • No battery disconnect is normally required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Small pick tool
  • Latex or nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front turn signal bulb, amber - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the headlight switch fully off.
  • Open the hood and secure it.
  • Replace both sides together for even brightness.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open access to the rear of the headlamp

  • Open the hood and locate the back side of the headlamp assembly.
  • If a cover blocks the rear bulb access, use the flat-blade screwdriver or trim removal tool to gently release it.
  • Work gently so clips do not break.

Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket

  • Reach behind the headlamp and find the turn signal bulb socket.
  • Use your hand to twist the socket counterclockwise and pull it straight out.
  • If it is tight, use a small pick tool carefully to help release any locking tab.

Step 3: Replace the bulb

  • Wear gloves and remove the old bulb from the socket.
  • Install the new front turn signal bulb, amber into the socket.
  • Make sure the bulb is seated fully and straight.

Step 4: Reinstall the socket

  • Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
  • Use your hand to twist it clockwise until it locks.
  • Reinstall any rear covers or access caps by hand.

Step 5: Test the turn signal

  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
  • Check that both front signals flash normally and the dashboard indicator is not blinking fast.

✅ After Repair

  • Walk around the car and confirm both front signals work.
  • Check that the bulb flashes amber, not white.
  • If one side does not work, reseat the socket and recheck the bulb.
  • If the flash rate is rapid, the bulb is not seated correctly or is the wrong type.
