🔧 Front Turn Signal Bulb - Bulb Replacement
This job replaces the front turn signal bulb inside each headlamp housing. On your Explorer, the bulb is accessed from behind the headlamp, so you do not need to remove the front bumper or headlamp assembly for a normal bulb swap.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Turn the lights off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle before starting.
- Let the headlamp area cool if the lights were recently on.
- Do not touch the glass of a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- If one side is out, the other side may be close to failing. Replacing both sides is smart.
- No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open access to the rear of the headlamp
- Open the hood and locate the rear of the headlamp assembly on the side you are servicing.
- If a cover, duct, or intake piece blocks access, use the 10mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the fasteners holding it in place.
- Use the trim panel removal tool (specialty) to release any plastic push clips.
- Set removed parts aside in order.
Step 2: Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Reach behind the headlamp and locate the turn signal bulb socket.
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise by hand to unlock it.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Twist first, then pull.
Step 3: Replace the bulb
- Remove the old bulb from the socket.
- Install the new front turn signal bulb into the socket.
- Make sure it seats fully and sits straight.
- Do not force the bulb.
Step 4: Reinstall the socket
- Insert the socket back into the headlamp housing.
- Rotate it clockwise until it locks.
- Reinstall any covers, ducts, clips, or fasteners you removed.
- Tighten any 10mm fasteners snugly. No factory torque spec is typically published for these access pieces.
Step 5: Test the new bulb
- Turn on the ignition.
- Activate the left and right turn signals one at a time.
- Confirm the new bulb flashes normally and the dash indicator works as expected.
✅ After Repair
- Check that the lens and housing are fully seated.
